LSS Mentoring Services has five programs under its umbrella -- three for youth and two for older adults! LSS matches volunteer mentors with children in the Sioux Falls area. The goal is to empower young people to succeed by establishing trusting relationships with adult volunteers. Good mentors have a significant impact on youth by providing guidance and developing consistent, long-term friendship

s. LSS operates three distinct youth mentoring programs. In School: mentoring in schools, grades PreK to 8
High School: mentoring in and out of schools, grades 9 to 12
Community: mentoring in the community, ages 7 to 14

LSS Better Together brings older adults ages 65 and up together with trained volunteers. The program operates in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Brookings counties. Better Together helps to establish trusting relationships and regular social opportunities between older adults who live on their own and LSS volunteers. The LSS Older Adult Resource Network (OARN) helps people ages 65 and older improve their quality of life where they put down roots. Aging in rural communities presents unique challenges that can limit access to healthcare, transportation, and other services that are vital for older adults to maintain their independence. The OARN Program is available in Douglas and Charles Mix counties. There is no charge for any of the services that are offered by LSS Mentoring Services.

It is back to school time for school personnel! Area counselors are hoping to see many new mentors this year. Here are some reasons counselors listed as to why mentors are so important for their students:

- You guys are amazing and help us support students who need consistent positive attention from a stable adult.

- Honestly seeing the relationships being built. Our mentors are amazing and take time out of their day to meet with students in need and I want them to know how appreciative we are of that!

- LSS recruits quality mentors to match with students at our school!

We are asking mentors of rising seniors what their time with their student - whether just a few years or in some cases, a decade together - has meant. Here is just one of many responses that blew us away!

Being a mentor to a high school senior means being a trusted guide during one of the most important transitions in a young person's life. Seniors are balancing big decisions about college, careers, or entering the workforce while also navigating the excitement and uncertainty of becoming independent adults. A mentor's role is not to make decisions for them, but to listen, encourage, ask thoughtful questions, and help them build the confidence to make informed choices for themselves. It also means being a consistent source of support, celebrating their successes, helping them learn from setbacks, and modeling integrity, resilience, and responsibility.

Hear what Isaac has to say about his mentor, Diane! Diane also mentors his brother, and the three have gone on many adventures in the community! Among the many places they have gone, a few highlights have been attending Summit League Basketball (they had never been to a college game or the Premier Center), Thunder Road (they love the go-karts) and volunteering at Lunch is Served.
