Today is World Mental Health Day 2026

Today, the World Federation for Mental Health invites us all to pause and reflect:

Meaningful change starts with listening—and grows when people with lived experience have a say in decisions that affect their lives.

Our Social Work students had a great time participating in Briar Cliff University’s Service Day! 💙💛 It was a wonderful opportunity to serve alongside others, connect as a community, and put our commitment to helping others into action. Proud of our students for sharing their time and energy!

Our students had the opportunity to visit the Crittenton Center and learn more about shelter placement and the support provided to children and families. It was especially wonderful to see our alum in action! Thank you for welcoming our students and sharing the meaningful work you do!

Faith Hurlbert, a senior in Briar Cliff University’s Social Work Department, BSW Student Representative for NASW-Iowa, and Social Work Administrative Assistant, spent Thursday, September 17, and Friday, September 18 attending the NASW-Iowa Symposium.

Faith had the opportunity to learn, network, and connect with Denise Rathman, MSW, Executive Director of the NASW-Iowa Chapter, and Peggy L. Trosper, MSW, LMSW, Director of Practicum Education and Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of Iowa School of Social Work. Peggy also serves on the NASW-Iowa Chapter Board.

Throughout the two-day symposium, Faith participated in sessions focused on professional development, trauma-informed practice, advocacy, social work education, and strengthening connections across the profession.

Opportunities like this allow our students to take their learning beyond the classroom, build relationships with social work professionals throughout Iowa, and bring new knowledge, ideas, and resources back to the Briar Cliff community.

We are proud to see our BSW students becoming actively involved in the social work profession while still completing their education!

What a fabulous time we had at the Celebrando Siouxland Parade in South Sioux City, Nebraska, today! Thank you to the Social Work and Spanish Departments, along with the Briar Cliff cheerleaders, for representing BCU and walking in the parade. It was a wonderful day celebrating our community! 💙💛

What a fun and educational day visiting Holy Spirit Senior Living! A special thank-you to Stacey Quade, social worker and BCU alumna, for teaching our students about the different levels of senior living and the policies that affect services and care for older adults. We greatly appreciate Stacey sharing her knowledge and experience with our students!
