Many of you may have known Dr. Sage, who was a driving force behind research on technology in social work and best practices, and a truly remarkable and dedicated social worker. Many of our practices at BCU were developed by Melanie and her colleagues. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Melanie Sage, LCSW, on Friday. We extend our profound condolences to her husband, Todd Sage, and her family, friends, colleagues, and students. Dr. Sage was a visionary leader, educator, and researcher who pioneered the integration of technology and digital literacy into social work practice. Her dedication to the profession, passion for equity, and impactful mentorship leave an indelible mark on our community. She and Dr. Laurel Hitchcock, LICSW-S, were guests on our Social Work Month Facebook Live in March to discuss a book they edited, "101 Things To Do With A Social Work Degree." It was amazing discussion and we are so glad she was able to share her deep knowledge of the profession. Rest in peace, Dr. Sage. Your legacy lives on in the countless lives you touched and inspired.

💙 Why Social Work 💙
Anjelica began her college journey as a psychology major, but during her junior year she realized she wanted a more versatile educational and career path. After learning more about the social work program, she decided to double major and embrace a field that blends human connection, advocacy, and opportunity. She chose social work because it allows her to work with people from all walks of life while also promoting personal growth and social justice—two values that deeply matter to her.

⚖️ Internship / Practicum Placement⚖️
Anjelica is completing her practicum at Siouxland Mental Health Center, where she has gained meaningful experience in the mental health field and supporting individuals through real-world challenges.

🎯 Career Goals 🎯
After graduation, Anjelica plans to return to Colorado and pursue a social work position in mental health, medical, or educational settings. She also hopes to continue her education by enrolling in a Master’s program once she gains experience in the field.

🌱 Long-Term Goals 🌱
Her long-term dream is to become a licensed therapist and work in a mental health agency or school setting, helping others heal, grow, and thrive.

🌟 Favorite Memory 🌟
One of Anjelica’s favorite memories from the program was attending NASW Legislative Day, where she experienced advocacy in action and saw how social workers can create meaningful change on a larger scale.

✨ Advice for Future Students✨
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and ask as many questions as possible. Build connections with classmates, professors, and professionals—especially during practicum. Show up authentically and trust that being yourself is enough.

🎭🎶 Fun Fact 🎭🎶
Anjelica loves reading and watching TV and movies. Her favorite series is Game of Thrones.

We are excited to see where Anjelica’s journey leads next. The future of social work is brighter because of students like her. 💙

Name: Rose Davis
Hometown: Chicago, IL

💙 Why Social Work 💙
I aspire to be an agent for purposeful change. I am passionate about creating opportunities and advocating for individuals and communities facing barriers. My goal is to help create meaningful changes and support underserved populations.

⚖️ Internship / Practicum Placement⚖️
Through my work and practicum at the Family Access Center, I am gaining hands-on experience supporting individuals and families. My passion for social work stems from a desire to address food insecurity, housing instability, and other challenges that impact underserved communities

🎯 Career Goals 🎯
I plan to pursue my master’s degree in social work and obtain state licensure. My goal is to become a community advocate working to create meaningful and sustainable change within underserved populations.

🌱 Long-Term Goals 🌱
In the future, I hope to establish my own nonprofit organization in a struggling or underserved neighborhood, similar to the one I grew up in. My vision is to provide resources, advocacy, and opportunities that empower individuals and families.

🌟 Favorite Memory 🌟
One of my favorite memories was meeting Caitlin Drey during NASW Legislative Day. Her dedication to creating change inspired me as someone interested in community advocacy.

Another meaningful experience was being invited by Professor Reinert to participate in a podcast where I spoke about my experience as an African American. This opportunity introduced me to public speaking and encouraged me to connect with leaders who share similar values.

✨ Advice for Future Students✨
Find your “why.” Understanding your purpose and recognizing the passions that fuel your drive can help prevent burnout. Set clear boundaries and ensure they are respected — advocacy begins with self. Take time to reflect, prioritize self-care, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.

🎭🎶 Fun Fact 🎭🎶
I am a proud member of the Sioux City Community Choir, NAACP, and New Life in Christ COGIC. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering at the food pantry, working with Lamb Community Theater, and expressing creativity through writing and painting. My artwork is occasionally displayed at the Chicago Urban Retreat, maintained by my godmother.

Rose, we are excited to see where the journey leads next. The future of social work is stronger because students like you!. 💙
