6/22/11 was the anniversary of the Olmstead Supreme Court decision. This case was hugely important because it put more power behind the Americans w/Disabilities Act—making states uphold their responsibility for getting supportive housing for people w/mental disorders who were better served living in the community than in psychiatric institutions.

For the anniversary of the Olmstead decision, Lois Curtis, one of the original plaintiffs in the case, meets with the President and gives him a special gift. The landmark Supreme Court paved the way for Ms. Curtis and others with disabilites to live in the community rather than institutions.

Several factors affect a child’s response to a disaster. The way children see & understand their parents' responses are very important. Children are aware of their parents’ worries most of the time, but they're particularly sensitive during a crisis. Parents should admit their concerns to their children & stress their abilities to cope with the disaster. Falsely minimizing the danger will not end a child’s concerns.

Floods are one of the most common hazards in the United States. Flood effects can be local, impacting a neighborhood or community, or very large, affecting entire river basins and multiple states.

For the parents who had to wait longer to hear a first word, who spent more time in doctors offices with their child than on play dates, who endure countless bad days and the stares from other people; for the parents whose child's first friend was their therapist; for the parents who face special needs everyday, WE SUPPORT YOU! Repost if you are proud to be and/or know a family with a child with special needs.
