Luke James Schneiders Annual Large Deer Contest

Luke James Schneiders Annual Large Deer Contest Feel free to let any Sioux City resident hunters know about the memorial contest during the first shotgun season! Dec. 4-8. "I'll go second season."

FROM THE SIOUX CITY JOURNAL: Father establishes hunting memorial in son’s memory

Jon Schneiders lost his 21-year-old son to a car crash Oct. 17, 2009, he wanted to create a memorial which would celebrate his son's love of hunting. "Luke and Ihunted together since he was three or four years old when we road hunted for pheasants," Jon said. "All through high school and later in work he always made

time for hunting." So, Jon decided to hold the "Luke James Schneiders First Annual Large Deer Contest." It is limited to Sioux City residents only and will be held during the first shotgun season. The entries should be a minimum of 200 pounds, dressed out. The winner will be the hunter with the heaviest dressed deer and will win a $500 prize. Deer will be weighed at Jon's home and entrants should call 252-9094 to have their deer weighed between noon and 8 p.m. "He was my hunting partner for deer, turkey and pheasant," Jon said. "He was just a regular guy who worked hard and played hard. We always hunted deer during the first season. "I lost him early, but hunting kept our relationship pretty solid," he said. "Iwon't be hunting the first season any more," he concluded.

Last night...just now got a call for a weigh. May be the winner, since we have only had one other and it didnt weigh the amount ;o(...If the winners of last year, didnt tell people; we would have had no one :o( So thanks to Richard Nolan for letting Shawn Petit know and Troy Musick for letting Tate Nugent know... I def think that we need to get the word out better! We put it in the paper, but I guess not a lot of people see that, eh? Anyway...glad we at least have another one to weigh...Ill update with the news!!

I just wanted to say that I know some people are not for killing animals...I was the same way when I was younger. (Altho Im not into killing just any 'ol animal) But as I grew I realized that deer are feeding us and people do not kill them for nothing (Or I hope people do not kill for just the thrill and do not use the animal for food ect...) Anyone who does, is not right!

This was the way of our ancestors...If you eat meat, this is no different then that. Except it is you doing it all from the hunting of the animal to processing the meat and it is way cleaner meat. (Which is better)

I just wanted to say that because I feel some people may have been turned off by this. BUT this is what my parents and Luke did together and it is one way that they can remember Luke. Every first season of shotgun when they used to go hunting together they know that they are doing something for Luke. SO just think of this as a way to remember Luke...Not as killing animals
