Day 10/10
Low‑Barrier Shelter Myths vs Facts
It’s a common misconception: that if shelters didn’t exist, homelessness wouldn’t either.
But shelters don’t create homelessness — they respond to it.
Homelessness stems from housing shortages, poverty, trauma, and systemic barriers.
Low‑barrier shelters simply provide safety and connection while people work toward stability.
Removing shelter doesn’t solve homelessness — it just removes safety.

Low‑Barrier Shelter Myths vs Facts
A common misconception is that low‑barrier shelters attract people from other cities.
In reality, most guests are long‑time local residents who lost housing right here — in the same neighborhoods where they’ve worked, raised families, and built community.
Homelessness isn’t imported; it’s local.
Low‑barrier shelters don’t draw people in — they keep people safe where they already belong.

Today was a day we will never forget. A young man who came to us right before his senior year, newly 18, with no home and no support walked across a stage that some thought he’d never reach. (We knew better)

In what was supposed to have been the best year of his adolescence, he battled and OVERCAME homelessness, found stable housing, and completed every requirement to graduate.

Our staff was honored to be invited to witness his moment of triumph.

When you support The Warming Shelter, you support people like this exceptional young man, who refused to be defined by the hand they were dealt and instead chose courage, resilience, and hope.

We are so incredibly proud of you.
Congratulations to a remarkable Class of 2026 graduate.🎓🎓🎓

Rebuilding begins with stability, cleanliness, and access to basic necessities.

Our friends at Ziegler demonstrated outstanding community support by supplying clothing, hygiene products, feminine hygiene items, and other essential resources that set our clients up for success.

Thank you, Ziegler, for your partnership and generosity.

Low‑Barrier Shelter Myths vs Facts
Day 8/10
Today we’re clearing up a major misunderstanding: that “low‑barrier” means there are no rules and anything goes.
In reality, low‑barrier shelters operate with clear, consistent community standards focused on safety, respect, and non‑violence. What they don’t do is enforce unnecessary requirements that keep people out — like sobriety mandates, strict curfews, or documentation hurdles.
Low‑barrier doesn’t mean “no expectations.” It means removing barriers that prevent people from accessing safety while still maintaining a stable, respectful environment for everyone inside.
Compassion and structure can — and do — coexist

Leadership Spotlight of the Week: Robert “Bobby” Newlin!

Bobby joined The Warming Shelter on July 28th, 2023, and from day one he has been a steady, reliable, and compassionate presence on our team. As our DCA Manager on overnights, Bobby works during the hours when many of our guests need the most support — and he handles those moments with patience, respect, and a calm leadership style that truly sets the tone for the night.
He is the kind of teammate who notices what needs to be done and jumps in without hesitation. Whether he’s helping a guest through a difficult moment, supporting staff, or keeping the building running smoothly, Bobby shows up with a genuine heart for people and a commitment to our mission.

His consistency, kindness, and quiet strength make a real impact on our shelter community. We are incredibly grateful for the work he does and the compassion he brings to every shift.

Help us celebrate Bobby today — we’re lucky to have him as part of The Warming Shelter family.

Day 7/ 10
Low‑Barrier Shelter Myths vs Facts
Today we’re taking on a fear‑driven misconception: that low‑barrier shelters increase crime in the neighborhoods around them.
Decades of research — across cities of all sizes — shows the opposite. When people have access to safe shelter, communities see fewer emergency calls, less visible homelessness, and more stability overall. Crime doesn’t rise because people are indoors, connected to staff, and supported instead of surviving outside.
Low‑barrier shelters don’t create chaos. They reduce it.
Safety grows when people have somewhere safe to go.

Low‑Barrier Shelter Myths vs Facts
Day 6/10
Today we’re challenging a harmful misconception: that people staying in low‑barrier shelters “don’t want help” or “aren’t interested in housing.”
The truth is the exact opposite. Most guests are actively trying to stabilize, reconnect with services, and secure permanent housing but traditional shelter rules often shut them out before they ever get the chance. Requirements like sobriety, curfews, or documentation don’t measure motivation; they measure privilege and stability.
Low‑barrier shelters remove those obstacles so people can finally access the support they’ve been seeking all along.
People want safety. People want housing. People want help.
We just have to make sure the door is actually open
