* KILLS FEROCIOUS LION
ED. GLASER, 19 YEARS OLD, SHOOTS ANIMAL
Boys Kill Grown Beast Near Calhan in Exciting Adventure.
A large, full-grown mountain lion, the first seen in this county in years, was shot and killed by Ed. Glaser, the 18-year-old (ed: why it is 19 in the headline and 18 here, I don't know) son of a Calhan ranchman, and his companion, aged 14 years, on the plains, 11 miles southeast of Calhan, Thursday evening. The lion had been devouring lambs in the eastern part of El Paso county, and, together with its mate, which is still prowling around, was a source of terror to the neighborhood, especially in a district where a number of women claimholders are living the required period on government land.
The skin was bought from the lads by A. J. Henbest, a pioneer ranchman of Calhan, and brought to this city where it was exhibited yesterday in the window of the Smith drug store, 117 South Tejon street. It was later taken to Stainsky's where it will be mounted. The animal weighed 189 pounds and measured seven feet 10 inches from tip to tip.
Calhan is about 30 miles east of this city, on the Rock Island road. Ed. Glaser and his companion were herding the sheep when they spied the lion several hundred yards away. Glaser emptied both barrels of an old shotgun into the animal, but apparently without effect. He then sent his younger companion for a .22 caliber rifle while he watched the lion, which assumed the defensive at all times. On receiving the rifle, he shot the beast in the head, killing it instantly.

* According to dispatches received from the eastern part of the county the rainfall for the two days was in excess of .43 inches at the weather stations at Rush, Union Hill, Wayne, Albano, and Yoder. Encouraged by the prospects, Charles Hartman, living near Calhan, will start his winter wheat harvest Saturday and expects a yield of about 12 bushels an acre. Joseph Huck, the largest winter wheat grower in the Calhan district, expects to start the headers to work about July 7 or 8. Winter rye, the favorite crop among the dairymen, stands from three to four feet high. Prospects for a large potato crop are better than for a number of years. If the present rains continue, farmers of Calhan will be able to ship new potatoes within the next 10 days or two weeks.

* (Ramah) Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brovsky and family of Colorado Springs came Sunday June 26, and took their father, Joe Brovsky, to Denver with them. They visited at the Albert Brovsky's new home.
* (Ramah) Carroll Barry and Virginia Lee Gunderson are visiting their aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Bodhaine.
* (Falcon) Elmer Wood is a patient at Memorial Hospital where he is recuperating from surgery. A number of friends have stopped to see him. The Woodys are also proud grandparents, as their son Ron, and wife, have a new baby boy.
* (Falcon) Tuesday dinner guests at the John Solberg home were Mr. and Mrs. Dude Compher and Bill, Russell Curtis and Mr. and Mrs. Jens Solberg. The men were working cattle.
* (Falcon) Connie Thompson and Larry Humphrey were guests of honor at a community shower sponsored by the JGN Club. A mock wedding with an all-male cast furnished the entertainment for the evening. Those participating in appropriate costumes were: musician, Roger Hawkins; usher, Roger Schutte; candlelighters, Delmar Humphrey and Bob Muhe; groom's father, R. W. Hudson; groom's mother, Ralph Murr; bride's father, Dennie Murr; bride's mother, Joe Davis; groom, David Lee Gieck; best man, Frank Murr; clergyman, Bill Parker; flower girl, Jim Thompson; maid of honor, Allen Thompson; bride, Reuel Murr; and ring bearer, Gene Hamby. A table for gifts was attractively decorated with a bride, wedding bells, streamers and bouquets. Carol Totten and Dorothy McCune assisted Connie and Larry in opening many lovely gifts after which refreshments of coffee, punch and cake were served in the lunchroom.

* (Hanover) Ronnie Vette is working in Colorado Springs this summer, helping at the Houtchens.
* (Edison) Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sopko Sr. visited Mrs. Katie DeVorss Sunday afternoon.
* (Edison) Mrs. Mary Hamrick and Mr. and Mrs. John Hamrick, all of Pueblo, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McKay and family, of Boone, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sopko, Jr. and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sopko, Sr. It was a family celebration of Mr. Sopko's birthday.

* (Peyton) Bobby Ward was able to return to his home from the hospital Tuesday. He is getting along just fine. His hand is in a partial cast, which he will have to wear for a while.
* (Peyton) The Peyton Ladies Guild fiftieth anniversary dinner and meeting will be held July 15 at the Peyton School. All former members are welcome to attend. This will be a potluck dinner, the Guild furnishing teh [sic] meat, bread and drink. Every one attending is asked to bring a covered dish.
* (Peyton) Mrs. Lonnie LeMasters called on Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kinnaman Tuesday.
* (Peyton) Mrs. Melvin Fields and family are visiting relatives in Missouri this week.

* Jules Bodhaine Rites Were Held Thursday
Funeral services for Jules Bodhaine, Ramah pioneer, who died June 25 at a Colorado Springs hospital, were held June 28 at the Swan Funeral Home. The Rev. William Zolp officiated. Burial was in the Ramah Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Gaston Barnhill, Roy Winters, Charles Sengbeil, Grover McElvain, Green Christian and John Mikita.
Mr. Bodhaine was one of the original old time threshers, moving from farm to farm in eastern Colorado with a threshing crew. He homesteaded on the Big Sandy and received a patent on the land from President Theodore Roosevelt. The Ramah Dam was developed principally on this property. It was his desire that a lake be created for public use. This development was know [sic] originally as Lake Jules Bodhaine and its realization was due to the effort of Sen. John A. Carroll, Sen. Gordon Allot, Thomas L. Kimball former director of the Colorado Department of Game and Fish, the late Kenneth W. Chalmers, state conservationist and Don E. Smith, work unit conservationist.
Mr. Bodhaine was born June 25, 1878 (ed: I am kinda surprised they didn't mention the fact that he died on his birthday) near Paris France. He came to the United States with his parents in 1886. He is survived by nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Helena Bodhaine, of Ramah.

* (Calhan) Mr. and Mrs. Billy Brandt and daughters, and Shirley Mulligan, Rick, Billy and Shirley May were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bandt, Zane, Chris and Curtis Sunday.
* (Calhan) Mr. and Mrs. Billy Dzuris and family spent Sunday at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
* (Calhan) Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Craig's weekend visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Aregi and daughters of Denver. At the family picnic Saturday evening, Mrs. Johnny Lazor and Jody and Kris attended as did Aregi's family, and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Craig. Sunday guests were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Holland and children of Cheraw and Lewis Holland of Stockton, Calif.
* (Calhan) The Doyle Marshbanks family spent the weekend camping and water-skiing at Ramah Reservoir.
* (Calhan) Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hlatki accompanied Mr. and Mrs. John Curtis of Black Forest on a recent trip through the Northwestern United States, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.
* (Calhan) Helen Fuchs recently underwent surgery and is staying with her daughter and family, Mrs. Victor Anders, while recuperating.

* (Edison) Most residents will have to replant entire crops because of unusually high winds last week. Some roads between here and Fowler are reported to be impassable because of sand blown over them.
* (Edison) Mrs. Edith Glaue visited Mrs. Bessie Crites and Mrs. Irene Lavely Friday morning.
* (Edison) Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rasner, Elmo Clark and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Clark were Thursday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Clark.

Calhan Youth Winner Of Speech Contest
Jack Vorenberg was the first place winner in the Sr. Division of the El Paso County Speech Contest. His topic was "The Price is Right."
Vorenberg represented the county at the state 4-H conference at Fort Collins and was selected as one of the top twelve state finalists.
Vorenberg is a senior in Calhan High School and has been an active member of 4-H for eight years.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vorenberg of Calhan.
