Soaring Spirits International

Soaring Spirits International Soaring Spirits builds community. Welcome to the community at the Soaring Spirits International.

We provide innovative, peer-based grief support programs for widowed people of all genders, sexual orientation, and marriage status. We work hard to provide a national network of support for anyone grieving the loss of someone they love – with a special emphasis on those who have been widowed. SSI offers a variety of programs intended to connect our members for the two-fold purpose of providing pe

er based support opportunities, and connecting the many wonderful organizations that provide services offering comfort for those traveling the difficult journey of grief. Soaring Spirits International is an inclusive, non-denominational organization focused on hope and healing through the grieving process. We are positive, and forward thinking, while focusing on offering our members the tools and resources they need to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the death of a loved one.

Today, August 31st, marks 21 years since Phillip Hernandez died.

He is missed every day. But his love lives on - in the people Soaring Spirits has supported, in the community we’ve built, and in every story of resilience we witness.

Please join us by honoring Phillip, the man whose love helped inspire the founding of Soaring Spirits, by donating to the memorial fund created in his name.

Your gift is a promise of support to the widowed people of tomorrow 💗

"After a loss, you have to learn to believe the dead one is dead. It doesn't come naturally." - Meghan O'Rourke

After your person died, did you find yourself slipping back into moments where your brain thought they were still alive?

Picking up the phone to call them . . . getting excited to tell them about your day . . . and so much more. We can relate. It doesn't come naturally to believe that our person is really dead. This information rocks our entire world, and reshapes our existence as we know it. It makes sense that it takes time and practice to process it.

Throughout August, Michele is sharing stories that celebrate the many sides of Phil—the kindness, the generosity, and the wonderful sense of humor that made him unforgettable.

Phil was wonderfully silly. He danced in the kitchen, jumped out from behind doors to surprise people, and called friends at five o'clock in the morning on their birthdays just so he could be the first to wish them a happy birthday. His dry wit had a way of catching people completely off guard.

This photo is a perfect example. While visiting a friend's office, Phil was determined to sit on the copy machine and leave behind a souvenir no one would ever forget. Michele managed to negotiate this pose instead.

As Michele often says, she misses the laughter, the ridiculous ideas, and the quiet moments that balanced all of Phil's playfulness. It was a combination that made him especially beloved by teenagers, who somehow always knew they could trust him.

That same spirit of generosity lives on through the Phillip Hernandez Memorial Fund. Each year, Soaring Spirits works alongside Michele to renew the fund with a goal of raising $20,000. To date, the fund has provided more than 1,500 newly widowed people with immediate, waitlist-free, cost-free access to research-informed support and a compassionate community.

If Phil's story or Michele's memories bring a smile to your face, we invite you to honor his memory with a gift to the Phillip Hernandez Memorial Fund. Together, we can ensure that his legacy of kindness, laughter, and quiet generosity continues to bring hope to people who need it most.
