Throughout history, we have looked to flowers as symbols - in times of loss, in times of love, in times of celebration.

During World War I, the intense bombardment of the battlefields of Flanders in Northern Belgium disturbed the soil, inadvertently creating the perfect conditions for the dormant seeds of Papaver rhoeas, the common poppy, to bloom in abundance. The exact same act which cost so many soldiers their lives was simultaneously an act of creation.

In May of 1915, seeing the battlefield spring to life even amid the graves of his fallen comrades, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields”, cementing the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance that is still worn on lapels today in honor of fallen service members.

(Photo is of a different species of red poppy - Papaver orientale - located in our A-Mazing Water Garden.)

While flora is our focus, The Oregon Garden is home to an abundance of fauna as well! Our more than 80 acres include both actively managed landscape and low-intervention natural areas which serve as habitat for native and non-native wildlife.

These are just some of the species observed on our property:

☑️ All sorts of birds including ducks, woodpeckers, owls and herons
☑️ Insects and arachnids of all kinds
☑️ Bullfrogs and Pacific tree frogs
☑️ Rough-skinned newts
☑️ Garter snakes
☑️ Deer
☑️ Wild turkey
☑️ Rabbits and hares
☑️ Coyote
☑️ Cougar
☑️… and our domesticated koi and chickens!

The presence of these creatures makes the Garden an excellent place not only for recreation, but for environmental education! Children especially love looking for critters in our A-Mazing Water garden.
