Silverton Medical Rescue SMR is one of the first combination EMS and Search & Rescue teams. Call 911. ~~~ We also boast the highest mean elevation in the country at 11,240 feet.

We boast the highest mean elevation in the country at 11,240 feet serving San Juan County, Colorado.

~~~ Need us, emergent or not? Silverton Medical Rescue (nonprofit, 501(C)(3)) is one of the first combination EMS and Search & Rescue teams in the State of Colorado, which affords us the ability to provide the highest level of emergency care possible in both the town of Silverton and the austere environment of San Juan County. Our county covers 388 square miles (1005 sq km) of some of the most remote and dramatic terrain in the contiguous United States, of which Silverton (population 637) is the only incorporated town. We provide an advanced continuity of care from the field to the hospital, and this standard has yielded incredible patient outcomes. This unique framework of mountain rescue-emergency care has proven to be the most effective model of emergency medical services San Juan County has ever had. With our incident types ranging from everyday lift-assists and cardiovascular compromises to backcountry motor vehicle accidents and alpine rescues, our personnel must be ready to respond to and manage an uncommon range of scenarios. This model requires an incredible amount of training for our staff - not only requisite medical expertise, but also extensive backcountry rescue training such as avalanche rescue, swift-water rescue, technical rope rescue, helicopter operations, and other advanced search and rescue techniques.
“I think most of you know me, but if not — I’m Tyler George, director of Silverton Medical Rescue. I was born and raised here, and working in EMS in Silverton is something of a family tradition: my uncle Tom Galbraith worked on the ambulance, my dad Chris George volunteered for years as an EMT, and my mom and brother both worked on the ambulance too.
We’ve come a long way from our all-volunteer roots, and none of it would have been possible without the countless people who dedicated their time to this service. To everyone who has ever worked or volunteered for Silverton Ambulance or Search & Rescue, thank you.
A few years ago, we combined our Ambulance and Rescue services, and since then we’ve run high-profile rescues and earned some real recognition, including the CSAR Award for Valor and the EMSAC Presidential Award, one of the highest honors an EMS service in Colorado can receive. It is only through the support we receive from the community that we were able to win these awards, and we hope they are as proud as we are.
Ten years ago, the citizens of San Juan County voted for a sales tax increase that allowed us to improve our emergency services system. That support has saved lives. We are always cognizant of the responsibility we have to the voters to honor that support, and we do not take it lightly.
Now we’re starting our next chapter: planning a new EMS and emergency management building, with space for training programs like CPR, basic life support, and Stop the Bleed — built to serve a growing community into the future.
Thank you for 50 years of support. I’m proud of what we’ve built together.”
A shout out to our sister SAR program Everest Fire Rescue, working in the Khumbu Region of Nepal:
Late Friday night, they sent a team of 6 out to rescue a guided group of 11 sherpas and trekkers trapped by unseasonal monsoon snowfall. The mission began at around 16,000’ below Island Peak.
After 6 long hours of trudging through knee-deep snow, they were able to make contact with the larger group struggling their way down. All were assisted safely back to camp, including a few helpless animals stranded along the way.🤎
Stranded rappeller on Jagged Mountain in the remote Weminuche Wilderness leading to lead climbing and rope pick-offs: complicated mission and an overnight stay for a single rappeller cliffed out
Jagged Mountain is a remote, highly technical 13,833-foot peak located deep in the Weminuche Wilderness of southwestern Colorado. Fifth class climbing with end of summer afternoon rains means challenging conditions for helicopters and rescue teams.
Don’t travel alone, carry a satellite SOS device like a Garmin InReach, and always know the route.
