Heading to Southwestern Colorado this fall? Mark Sept. 9 to celebrate Colorado’s 150th with high-country Hollywood history. Released in 1950, the musical Western comedy A Ticket to Tomahawk brought Tinseltown to the San Juan Mountains.
Filmed in Silverton and along the narrow-gauge tracks, the movie turned the town into an 1870s backdrop and featured local steam engine Rio Grande Southern #20 disguised as the “Emma Sweeny.”
The film’s publicity helped revive the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge route as a tourist destination and includes one of Marilyn Monroe’s earliest screen roles. Join us Sept. 9 at the Silverton Powerhouse Collective to celebrate the film that put local rail history on the big screen.
