On Friday, there was a celebration of the new Regional Food Hub building with the nonoprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey (HCC). During her welcome speech at the grand opening of the food hub on Oct. 16, 2026, Wendy Madson, director of HCC, which manages the food pantries in Silver Springs, Yerington and Dayton, said, "To our pantry leads, who lead with so much love: thank you. You carry an enormous responsibility. You work through the logistics, the deliveries, the shelves, and the daily challenges. You help connect people to resources beyond food, and you hold space for stories that are sometimes beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking, and sometimes overwhelming. You show us that serving people is not simply about meeting a need. It is about seeing the person who has that need. And to every volunteer, and to every voluntold-you know who you are! We see you. We love you. And this community is better because of you."

It is meant to combat food insecurity in rural Nevada.

New career opportunity for ages 18-24: Healthy Communities Coalition is joining forces with Nevada Volunteers to recruit, train, and deploy Nevada’s first Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC) to help teens access mental health resources. YMHC will bring young people as peers and near-peers to schools and communities. This initiative addresses not only the need for mental health resources, but will also create pathways for Nevada’s young adults to develop skills in this career field. Need for food supports have been rising steadily at HCC's pantries in Silver Springs, Yerington and Dayton. We're excited that funding through ARPA and Nevada Department of Agriculture has made possible a new Regional Food Hub building that will provide additional space to serve more people, expand outreach, increase resources, and meet the growing needs of the Lyon County community, including Silver Springs. Nevada Health Centers' mobile unit will be coming here to the food pantry on October 28, 2026 from 9:30am-3:30pm, bringing family medical services, serving patients with or without insurance.

Nevada Health Centers Mobile Medical Services offers a fully-equipped medical mobile unit that is staffed with a medical provider and assistants.

Medical services provided:
Full examinations
Well-child/adolescent care
Sick visits and acute care
Immunizations
Prescriptions for medications
Lab testing (established patients only)

Please come celebrate with us and experience the beautiful new, 4,000 square foot food pantry and regional food hub space designed to strengthen food security and reduce hunger throughout the Lyon County region. The public event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, an opening statement by Nevada poet laureate Shaun Griffin, amazing food by Chef Jonathan Chapin and team, cake by DHS Culinary, and live music by Bitter Root Duo! During the celebration, the many individuals and organizations who made this project possible will be recognized and thanked.
