May is month! The research is clear: s*x education supports healthier relationships, better health outcomes, and safer communities. Parents support it, young people need it, and every community should have access to it. When young people are taught how to practice consent, respect, and healthy communication, it can help them prevent s*xual and relationship violence.

MCASA's Executive Director & Counsel, Lisae C. Jordan, Esq., was in DC to testify before the House Judiciary Subcommittee in support of permanent protective orders. HR8481, known as Kayleigh’s Law, proposes the creation of permanent protective orders for serious federal s*x crimes and other federal felonies.
Thank you to Rep. Jamie Raskin, one of our leaders in Maryland and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Lucy McBath, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, for the invitation to share MCASA's expertise and for their longstanding commitment to empowering survivors. MCASA was honored to be at the signing today for SB685 - Sexual Abuse and Sexual Misconduct Model Response Policy in Schools. This important bill requires the State Department of Education to develop a model s*xual abuse and s*xual misconduct response policy that then must be adopted by local school systems. It was enacted after a terrible case involving a teacher and 3rd grade girls where the parents and community were not provided with information, resources, or support. The policy will help guide schools, preserve evidence, and provide parents with resources including r**e crisis centers and child advocacy centers.
Thank you to both of the bill's sponsors - Senator Dawn Gile and Delegate Heather Bagnall!

This National Military Appreciation Month, we honor the courage and dedication of service members, veterans, and military families, as well as the shared commitment to building communities where s*xual violence is not tolerated and survivors are supported. Across Maryland, service members, advocates, and community leaders are strengthening s*xual violence prevention efforts and expanding healing services for survivors, helping to ensure that everyone who serves can do so with safety, dignity, and respect. We celebrate not only their military service, but also their efforts to foster consent, accountability, and support within military communities.
Sexual assault services are available for all survivors in Maryland. Visit our website (https://loom.ly/juv2qFc) to find your local r**e crisis center; call 211 for local resources; or call MCASA's Sexual Assault Legal Institute - SALI for legal support at 301-565-2277.

“Demand [for survivor services] has not gone down; the funding for it should not go down either.”

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) introduced a $5 million amendment to the Legal Assistance for Victims OVW grant program in a House CJS Appropriations Committee hearing. We're thrilled the amendment passed by a voice vote - this funding would help survivors in Maryland and across the country access support, healing, and justice. THANK YOU Rep. Glenn Ivey for your continued advocacy for survivors of s*xual violence! On to the Senate!

🩵 Special thanks to National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, our national partners.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Natasha Guynes. A survivor and passionate victim advocate, she was a colleague in the fight against power-based violence and s*xual exploitation. Her loss will be felt throughout the state.
