🧵 “Just Hire a VA” is unhelpful advice a lot of the time, let’s dig in 👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻

“Just hire a VA,” doesn’t help you if you’re an overwhelmed ADHD small-business owner.
You have no spare executive function capacity to find and use a VA.
Hiring a VA may be the answer, but that doesn’t make it an actionable solution for you.
-
First, you may have never hired and managed a team member.
If you don’t have those skills, that’s just one more thing you have to figure out.
Which takes time and energy you don’t have.

Second, even if you do have the experience, actually doing it is still something you don’t have time for.
Even though you know outsourcing will *eventually* free up your time, getting there takes energy and effort.
Which makes it feel impossible to escape the overwhelm.

Especially because, third, what would you even delegate? Putting our non-linear thinking into a process doesn’t come naturally to us.
You can barely explain your processes to yourself, let alone to others.
Which has you worried you’ll spend more energy finding work for your VA than you ever spent doing the work yourself.

And finally, odds are excellent you’ve heard throughout your life what a disorganized screw-up you are.
So you’re bound to have strong feelings of shame about letting a VA (or anyone) see what “a mess” you’ve got happening in your business.
Not to mention it seems like other business owners are doing more with less. It can be embarrassing to admit you need more support.
“Just hire a VA” is simplistic advice that does nothing to solve your complicated problem.

The story of the guy who inspired this analogy went out to my email list this past Tuesday. If you missed it, it’s on the email archives (aka the blog page) of the website.

You’ll probably never say “turtleneck sweater” again without thinking of him. 🤣🐢

💜✨🧠

Image Description: this post is a ten slide graphic that is purple with the weirdly wired women logo and black text on it that reads as follows-

1 - There are a lot of ways to make change for a dollar. But not all of them are convenient to have in your pocket.

2 - That analogy comes in handy a lot because there are usually a few ways you can perform most tasks.
But which you’ll want to use depends on the result you want.

3 - Yet I often see small-business owners process most stuff as “check the box” tasks, even though they don’t want “check the box” results.

4 - But that’s exactly what they get...though they’re not sure why, because they’re getting stuff done.

5-A business is more than just getting stuff done, though. It’s a system, just like the engineering projects I used to design.

6-And there’s not much in a system that operates inside a little box, not affecting anything else. So instead of simply checking boxes, we need to consider our business as a whole if we want it to succeed.

7-That can seem daunting, but it really isn’t once you have processes in place.
I know, I know... I can hear the groans.

8-But creating processes is kinda fun!
No?
Ok...well, it’s fun for me! 😊

9-I’m working on something that’ll make it more fun (or at least less groan-y) for you. So stay tuned!
