Look what I ate! 🍴👀

Did you know that you can see into the stomach of protozoan with a strong enough microscope? This photo shows an amoeba with a protective shell called a testate amoeba, and we are looking through the translucent cell wall to observe the bacteria and smaller microbes the amoeba ate! This amazing microorganism was found in compost made by the New Earth Project.

Protozoa are single-celled organisms like amoebae and ciliates that play a crucial role in the Soil Food Web by consuming bacteria and releasing nutrients in a plant-available form. These microscopic predators help regulate bacterial populations, cycle nutrients, and improve soil structure.

Did you know that approximately 85-90% of how plants obtain nutrients is due to microbes?

This means that if your soil lacks the microbes needed for nutrient cycling, the food plants you grow will not be nutrient-dense. The U.S. spends twice as much on healthcare as any other country, yet our life expectancy ranks 7th.
There has been a dramatic rise in autoimmune diseases in recent years: diabetes, cancer, autism, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and 54% of children now have from some form of chronic disease.

Disease used to be something we caught from someone else. Now our bodies are breaking down and not functioning as they should. All of these diseases are nutritionally related, and more Americans are dying from poor diet than ever before.

To have nutrient-dense food, it must be regeneratively grown with the full complement of soil microbes present, carrying out the nutrient cycling nature created. Soil microbes determine how healthy and nutrient-dense a plant is. Food grown organically or in soil with backyard compost does not mean your food is nutrient-dense.

Part of the education program with the New Earth Project is a field trip to our Garden, where students see the full cycle of what happens to their leftover cafeteria food.

Students from Harrison Schmitt Elementary School observed the grinding of leftover food, its mixing with shredded wood and biochar, and its placement in the bioreactor. They gave the red-wiggler worms they have been caring for all year a new home in the bioreactor. Saying goodbye to worm friends can be emotional, so we played bioreactor bingo as a light moment.
