Dr. James Comer was the first African-American to become a full professor at the Yale School of Medicine. He is widely known as the researcher responsible for launching Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools.
-
-
SEL is a methodology that helps students better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and to demonstrate empathy for others.
-
SEL is incorporated into class curriculums allowing students to better connect with the material, themselves, and others through daily awareness, goal setting, and various practical interventions.
-
-
Students who have participated in SEL programs showed an 11 percentile increase in their overall grades and better attendance. Additionally, the skills learned within SEL programs have been shown to help students better cope with emotional stress, solve problems, and avoid peer pressure to engage in harmful activities.
-
-
Dr. Comer kept in mind communities dealing with racial and economic divides while developing SEL in hopes that students in these communities could use it to advance academically and relationally.

Thank you Dr. Comer for promoting healthy relationships and education!

It is glorious out there! ☀️Mindfulness can make a real difference in how present we are in our activities and with others; it can give us the opportunity to appreciate all that is around us 🤩☀️🍁 🌈☁️☺️

As the semester comes to an end, it becomes harder to have time for everything that needs to get done and everyone we want to spend time with. ⏰ ✅ Luckily, our very own Student Support Services has a variety of resources to help with that. You can get a time management calendar to print out like the one above 👆by visiting:

Make sure you know exactly how many hours you have to do the things you need to get done while investing in the relationships that matter most!

Empathy is a learned skill 🙂 Our natural response is to offer solutions or point out the silver lining but most of the time our friends sharing difficult situations with us just need a listening ear not a life coach, parent, or emotional handyman. Thankfully, that means that we can sit down, listen, and just be present. Here are some tips as we keep learning how to be empathetic friends!

Red or Blue. Blue or Red. 🇺🇸
Who knew two colors could make conversations SO AWKWARD?

We hope you are all doing well and having valuable dialog with those around you!
We could all use some help when it comes to disagreements though. Sometimes we loose it A LOT. It is hard to stay positive, calm, and gentle when talking with someone who disagrees with us. Good luck at thanksgiving… am I right?
-
-
-
Yet, disagreements are both beneficial and inevitable. In this world, it is impossible to reach unity through sharing the same opinions about politics. God is SO MUCH bigger than that. Instead, learning to care about, respect, and love people who think differently from us is the ultimate avenue to unity and understanding.
-
-
What if we saw every time we encountered someone different from us as an opportunity to understand and learn something about them or about our world?

Let’s seek understanding, speak kindly and “as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35 NIV)

Go in peace JBU! (but like real peace, the one that we make and not merely keep)

Murray Bowen was wearing hipster jackets and coming up with psychological theories before it was cool 😎

Differentiation is a relational concept that whether we know it or not, affects our relationships everyday.
If the definition above is not you, not to worry! There are many healthy practices to increase differentiation like boundary setting, emotional education, and opportunities to process.

Take a look at our story to see the qualities of differentiated people or follow the QR code for more info 🙂
