Altrusans Nannette Morris, Wende Pruden, and Melissa Eakins delivered books, cookies, combs and hairbrushes collected by all the club members to the ladies at Esther House. Today Altrusans recognize two important dates. The first is United Nations Day and the second one is Make a Difference Day. Today, we celebrate the 81st Anniversary of the United Nations, an organization founded in 1945 with a shared commitment to promoting international peace, protecting human rights, strengthening cooperation among nations, and building a better future for humanity. Happy National Make a Difference Day, America's largest annual day of community service, started in 1992 by USA Weekend magazine and now carried on by Points of Light, when millions of volunteers across the country roll up their sleeves to help their neighbors! The U.S. Navy's birthday is on October 13, 1775, which marks the day the Continental Congress authorized the formation of the Continental Navy. This year, 2026, marks the 251st anniversary of the Navy's founding. Check out our ASTRA youth as they work on a youth-initiated service project for veterans residing in the Veterans' Home in Cape Girardeau. They filled treat bags with candy to go to the Veteran's Home. Children will come to the Veterans' Home and trick-or-treat on Halloween and now thanks to ASTRA, the veterans have treat bags to hand out.
