I spent quite a while digging through history books at lodge, google image searching, and on line. My first clue is that it is traditional to show what Masonic bodies meet at the lodge. Second, the other three symbols represent blue lodge, Knights Templar-York Rite, and the Harp representing music- one of the Seven liberal arts revered in Freemasonry and one of the activities in the What Cheer Opera House. Grand Master Wade Sheeler told me that he believed it was an old symbol used by Royal Arch Masons. I the symbol I found in the book written by Thomas Webb, Webb Masonic Lodge #182 namesake, was that of the High Priest of a Royal Arch Chapter. Royal Arch is one of the degrees earned before becoming a Knight Templar in the York Rite.

Freemasons and Masonic scholars, what is the symbol at the bottom left of the Cornice of the What Cheer Opera House? This historic building, constructed in 1892 by Universe Lodge # 242 A.F. & A.M in What Cheer, Iowa, served as both a lodge and a public performance hall until the mid-1960s. The Opera House was also home to several other Masonic pendant bodies, including the York Rite and the Order of the Eastern Star. The What Cheer Opera House board preserved the building and continues to host performances there. Universe Lodge merged with Webb Lodge in the early 2000s and remains part of Webb Lodge's 160-year history. I initially believed I had identified the symbols on the cornice, but upon closer inspection, one symbol remained unclear. I consulted numerous Masons, and Iowa Grand Master Wade Sheeler has provided the closest identification to date. Further updates on the research findings will be provided in a subsequent post.
