Sometimes, the greatest support is simply showing up!
Recently, a preschool family came to us needing a little extra help navigating the registration process and preparing for their child’s first day of school. Mom asked for assistance with registration and wondered if someone could meet her at drop-off to help her learn the preschool’s routines and safely navigate the sign-in and sign-out process.
So, we showed up.
At Signal Mountain Social Services, we believe in meeting people where they are. Sometimes that means providing food or financial assistance. Sometimes it means connecting someone with a resource. And sometimes, it means walking alongside a parent on the first day of preschool until they feel confident doing it on their own.

That’s what we do. We meet people where they are, without judgment, and help them take the next step forward.

Because sometimes a little support at just the right moment can make all the difference.

We Believe in the Power of Education!

We believe education has the power to open doors, change lives, and create brighter futures.
Through our scholarship program, we help make educational opportunities possible for Signal Mountain students and families facing financial barriers. This year, we are proud to support 13 post-secondary scholarship recipients and 5 preschool scholarship recipients.

Each scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It provides students with a greater opportunity to pursue their educational goals while building a stronger foundation for their future.
We’ve seen the lasting impact of this program through past recipients, including Emma, now an architect; Jarren, who holds the position Area Manager of Operations at Amazon; and Jaylah, who recently started a medical chapter dedicated to recruiting women and minorities to pursue careers in medicine.
We are so proud of every scholarship recipient and grateful to the donors and community partners who help make these opportunities possible. Together, we’re opening doors and building brighter futures.

Sometimes, all it takes is one phone call to create a meaningful impact.

On August 12, one of our social workers received a call from a gentleman named Bob, who simply wanted to learn more about Signal Mountain Social Services and our work as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our social worker had the opportunity to share about the programs and services we offer, provide an update on our Back-to-School Program, and talk about the scholarships that help support students in our community.

She even walked Bob through our website so he could see more of the work being done at SMSS.

Just eight days later, on August 21, we received an incredible $2,000 donation from Bob to support our Back-to-School Program!

We are so grateful for opportunities to share the mission of SMSS and invite others to learn more about the services and support we provide to our community. You never know where one conversation may lead or how one person’s generosity can make a difference.

Thank you, Bob, for taking the time to call, learn about our services, and invest in the children and families we serve. Your generosity will make a meaningful impact!

A reminder that there’s still time to help our four-legged friends!

Our friends at 517 Subs are collecting pet food donations through August 31 to help support the families we serve at Signal Mountain Social Services.

Allison M. recently stopped by our office with a generous monetary donation, and we are so thankful for her support and commitment to helping both people and pets in our community!

For so many of us, pets are more than just animals, they are beloved family members. They provide companionship, comfort, and unconditional love. When a family is going through a difficult time, making sure their pets have food can be one less worry on their plate.

Thank you to 517 Subs and everyone who has already donated or plans to donate! Your generosity helps families keep their beloved pets happy, healthy, and by their side.

Donations are being collected through August 31 and can be dropped off at 517 Subs on Taft Hwy or brought into our office. 633 Mississippi Ave.

One of the important roles of our SMSS social workers is connecting families with resources that can make a real difference. Sometimes, that means helping families navigate an application process and making sure they have the support they need along the way.
This summer, Mary Katharine helped families apply for LIHEAP, a program that provides assistance to eligible low-income households struggling with increasing home energy expenses. 20 families have received LIHEAP grants to help with their EPB bills totaling over $8000 in assistance. Grant funds are applied directly to the clients EPB account.
LIHEAP is an annual grant, but for our clients, this isn’t just an application. It can mean one less bill to worry about for the month and one more reminder that they don’t have to navigate challenging times alone.
We are proud of the work we do every day to make sure families know about available resources and, just as importantly, have someone to walk alongside them and help them access those resources.

Food Pantry Needs

Our SMSS Food Pantry is running low on a few items, and we’d be so grateful for our community’s help!

Current pantry needs:
• Shampoo & conditioner
• Cereal
• Hamburger Helper
• Sweet & salty snacks
• Oatmeal
• Canned fruit

We also have a couple of clients who are in need of washing machines and electric dryers. If you have a gently used appliance you’re able to donate, please reach out to us at 423-886-5982

Every donation, big or small, helps us keep our shelves stocked and support our neighbors when they need it most. Thank you for continuing to show up for our community!

A little kindness can make a big difference for our neighbors and their furry family members!

We are so grateful for Sara and Russ Holmes, owners of 517 Sub Shop, for choosing to support Signal Mountain Social Services this August through a pet food drive for our clients.

Sara and Russ have always had a heart for helping others. In the past, they have organized collections to support children in need, and this year they wanted to bring that same spirit of generosity closer to home by helping local families and their pets.

For many of our clients, pets are more than companions, they are family. They provide comfort, love, and support during some of life’s hardest seasons. We also recognize that caring for a pet comes with added expenses, and sometimes those costs can be difficult to manage.

Thanks to caring community members like Sara and Russ, we can help ease that burden and make sure families don’t have to choose between caring for themselves and caring for the pets they love.

If you would like to support this effort, pet food donations can be dropped off throughout the month of August at 517 Sub Shop, 1238 Taft Hwy, Signal Mountain.

Thank you, Sara and Russ, for reminding us that compassion comes in many forms and that together, our community can make a difference.

DIVE FOR DIAPERS!
Last year, Mila turned her love of diving into a Dive for School Supplies, helping local students start the school year with the supplies they needed.

This year, she’s diving back in, but for a different need!

Join Mila at the Signal Mountain Town Pool from 7–9 PM this Saturday for DIVE FOR DIAPERS!

This will be a fun-filled evening featuring a silly diving and jumping competition where participants can show off their best flips, cannonballs, jumps, and creative dives! Judges will award points, and the highest score will be crowned the winner, but everyone who participates will receive a prize!

And there’s an even bigger reason to jump in…
Mila is collecting diapers for Signal Mountain Social Services to help Signal Mountain families in need. Participants can help by donating diapers, making a monetary donation, or simply coming out to support this fun community event.

What makes this event especially meaningful is that Mila is doing it simply because she saw a need and wanted to help. She is a high school student with a heart for serving others, and this project is not being done for a requirement or award, it’s something she chose to do because she believes she can make a difference.

Last year, it was school supplies.
This year, it’s diapers.
And every year, it’s a reminder that you don’t have to wait until you’re an adult to make a difference in your community!!

Come dive, laugh, cheer Mila on, and help her make a difference for local families!

Generosity doesn’t have to wait for the holidays.

At Signal Mountain Social Services, we are blessed by the kindness of our community throughout the year and every gift, no matter the size, helps make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you to Allison M. for recently dropping off a generous donation to SMSS. We are also incredibly grateful to the Women of Faith at Signal Crest Church for their generous $500 donation to help support our programs and the families we serve.

Their gifts help provide resources for programs such as:
Education Services
Life Skills Counseling
Emergency Services

While many people think about giving during the holiday season, the needs of local families exist every day of the year. Your generosity today can help a child start school prepared, connect a family with counseling, provide food for a neighbor, or offer hope during a difficult time.

Thank you to everyone who chooses to invest in our mission. Together, we are building a stronger, more caring community for our neighbors on Signal Mountain. Please check out our website at signalmountainservices.org to learn more about our agency.
