Youth mental health cannot be an afterthought.

Nationally:
🧠 1 in 5 U.S. adolescents ages 12–17 has a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition.
💔 40% of high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

Closer to home:
🧩 63% of California youth with major depression did not receive treatment.
📍 Long Beach is home to 120,293 young people ages 5–24, and they deserve a stronger web of support.
🏫 In 2024–2025, Long Beach Unified School District mental health services reported 196,438 Wellness Center walk-ins and 12,511 individual counseling sessions.

The need is rising. We have to bridge gaps in services and build youth well-being early, consistently, and in community, not only once a student is in crisis.

At Dramatic Results, we integrate emotional regulation and coping skills into every workshop. Our teaching artists model healthy behaviors and build routines that help students practice these skills over time.

Lifelong Learners: This month, we are recommending an Education Week conversation featuring Jarvis R. Givens, a professor of education and African and African American studies at Harvard University, in dialogue with LaGarrett J. King. In the interview, they discuss Givens’ new book, “I’ll Make Me a World: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month,” which traces the evolution of the celebration from its radical beginnings in 1926 as “Negro History Week” to the ongoing work of preserving and carrying its legacy forward.

At Dramatic Results, we explore identity, belonging, and community with students, and we support educators with tools that invite reflection, dialogue, and culturally responsive practice. We believe that what we teach and remember shapes how young people see themselves.

“I want people to remember that the struggle to preserve, study, and teach Black history is always about more than the facts, names, and dates of the past. It is about recognizing and disrupting the way power dynamics in our society shape historical memory and it’s also about studying the way historical memory shapes how we define ourselves as a people and the dreams we imagine for the worlds of the future.” — Jarvis R. Givens

If you are in Long Beach, here are a few ways to learn and connect in community this month:
• Afro-Latinx Free Family Festival at MOLAA — Sunday, Feb 22, 11 AM - 5 PM (628 Alamitos Ave)
• Panel Discussion: Black Excellence in Education, hosted by the Greater Long Beach Black Democratic Club at the LBIAFF Hall — Tuesday, Feb 24 at 7 PM (2201 Cherry Ave)
• “For the Culture” storytelling and creative expression series at our longtime partner Long Beach Public Library — through Saturday, Feb 28 (events across branches)

Community notice: Dramatic Results will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 30.

We’re joining the nationwide shutdown to oppose ICE enforcement and the fear and instability it brings into our communities. Organizers are calling for a day of no work, no school, and no shopping.

This harm isn’t limited to immigrants. ICE terrorizes entire communities, disrupting schools, workplaces, and families, and normalizing state violence that affects all of us.

We believe ICE should be defunded, and that federal policy should reflect the people’s will by investing in care, safety, and due process instead of detention and intimidation.

We will be back on Monday, February 2.
