Better Bucks and Sierra Vista Community Connect
In case you didn’t know, Sierra Vista Community Connect is held on the first Thursday of the month and brings social service providers together at the Salvation Army Family Services Center. Community Connect is an effort to provide a one-stop shop for those seeking assistance with housing, food, healthcare, substance abuse and rehabilitation programs, domestic violence, and many others, including the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center.
The next Community Connect is this coming Thursday, August 7, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Salvation Army Family Services Center, 180 E. Wilcox Dr., Sierra Vista.
Sierra Vista Community Connect is a collaborative effort between many organizations. It is hosted by the Salvation Army Family Services Center, coordinated by the Unity Housing Network, and funded by Better Bucks of Sierra Vista.

Better Meals, a program of Better Bucks

Better Meals is the newest Better Bucks program, designed to help families struggling with school meal debt or the inability to pay for their child's school meals. Better Bucks is pleased to partner with Sierra Vista Unified School District (SVUSD) No. 68 to help ensure that children get the meals they need without burdening struggling families. Donations may be made to a specific student meal account, a classroom within a school, an individual school, or SVUSD to help alleviate aging meal debt and support struggling families.
In these last three Facebook posts, I've summarized our Better Bucks, Better Work, and Better Meals programs. I've kept the posts short to avoid the dreaded TL;DR comments. To learn more about Better Bucks and our programs, please visit our website at https://betterbuckssierravista.org .

Better Work, a program of Better Bucks

Better Work is a collaborative effort with the City of Sierra Vista, Good Neighbor Alliance (CCC), and others to provide temporary work for participants seeking to better their conditions. Better Work strives to schedule 20 work details per year; a detail consists of an eight-person crew working a four-hour shift. Participants work on removing trash and debris from city and state trust lands, and assisting/cleaning kennels at the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center. Better Work’s annual budget is roughly $18,090, allocated as follows: worker payments, $8,640; dumpster and dump fees, $7,650; and supplies, equipment, and safety items, $1,800. Previously, a grant from the Arizona Department of Housing, through the City of Sierra Vista, provided funding for Better Work; however, that grant has since expired.
How does the Better Work program benefit Sierra Vista? Better Work provides participants with an opportunity for temporary work, access to social services, and opportunities to obtain full-time employment. However, it is the work details that have the most impact on our community, as shown in the pictures below. In the roughly 20 months of operation., Better Work participants have removed 66,050 pounds, or approximately 33 tons, of debris and garbage from city and state-owned land, that might have gone.

Recently, I've seen Better Bucks mentioned in several comments on recent posts here in Chit Chat Sierra Vista and as a board member I’d like to provide some additional information.
Better Bucks of Sierra Vista is a small, non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization working in collaboration with local merchants, social service agencies, faith-based organizations, and city government to aid those in need within Sierra Vista. Better Bucks of Sierra Vista (BBSV) operates three programs: Better Bucks, Better Work, and Better Meals. All three programs are operated by a Board of Directors comprised of ten members. To avoid the dreaded TL;DR comments, I'll provide information on our programs one at a time in separate posts. Let's start with our oldest program, Better Bucks.
Better Bucks has been in operation for approximately three years and evolved from the concerns of generous individuals about giving cash to those in need without knowing how it would be spent. Better Bucks are $1 coupons sold as booklets of five, with a one-year expiration date. Better Bucks booklets cost $6 and can be purchased at City Hall, the police station, the city library, or Sierra Vista Food Co-op. Our participating merchants are Frys, Food City, Culvers, McDonald's (Fry Blvd), Goodwill, Manny's El Mercado, St. Vincent de Paul, and Sierra Vista Food Co-op. These merchants accept Better Bucks with the understanding that customers can't use them to buy alcohol, to***co, drugs, or drug paraphernalia. Our participating merchants have redeemed $58,050 in Better Bucks since the start of the program. Those giving better Bucks know how and where their coupons will be spent, and more importantly, they understand what Better Bucks cannot be used to buy.
