Dads matter too

Thereโ€™s a part of pregnancy loss we donโ€™t talk about enough:

Kyler and I unfortunately know loss. Weโ€™ve lost three of our own.

My body was the one going through it. My hormones. My appointments. My perimenopause starting at 25. The testing, the questions, the physical reminders that something had gone wrong.

So naturally, people looked at me.

They checked on me.
They hugged me.
They asked Kyler how ๐—œ was doing.

And I understand why.

But looking back, there was a man standing beside me who had lost something too.

That is its own kind of heartbreak.

Because dads often get handed a job before they ever get handed room to grieve.

Drive her home.
Hold her.
Take care of the other kids.
Remember what the doctor said because she can barely hear it.
Answer the texts.
Be steady.
Be strong.

And somewhere inside all that strength is a father who had already started imagining a life that suddenly isnโ€™t coming.

Maybe he pictured teaching them to fish.

Maybe he wondered whose eyes they would have.

Maybe he calculated the due date in his head.

Maybe he never said any of it out loud.

A father doesnโ€™t have to carry a baby in his body to have carried that baby in his plans, his prayers, his imagination and his heart.

And sometimes while everyone is asking him to hold her together, nobody notices heโ€™s trying not to fall apart himself.

So during Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, yes, check on the mama.

Please check on the dad standing beside her, too.

Tiny lives matter

09/18/2026

People have a lot to say about how they think they would grieve if it were them.

But until youโ€™ve stood there and realized your child is really gone. you donโ€™t know.

You donโ€™t know if youโ€™d scream or go completely numb. If youโ€™d post every memory you have or disappear from the world. If youโ€™d cry every day or somehow go weeks without being able to cry at all.

There is no graceful way to survive something that was never supposed to happen.

No right timeline. No right amount of sadness. No right way to keep living after burying your child.

Weโ€™re all just doing whatever we can to wake up the next morning and somehow keep going.

Infant loss doesnโ€™t end when everyone else goes home.

Parents may continue grieving through birthdays, due dates, holidays, pregnancies, family gatherings, and ordinary days that unexpectedly bring memories rushing back.

One of the most meaningful things you can do is simple:

Remember their baby.

Say their babyโ€™s name.
Remember important dates.
Ask how theyโ€™re doing.
Listen without trying to fix their grief.

A baby can have a very short life and leave a lifelong impact.
