Be aware!
NEVER give any financial information over the phone to callers asking for it. When in doubt, hang up and call the business or institution’s number that you have on file to verify any monetary request.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office was advised of the following scam:
A citizen reported receiving a call from a man stating he was Deputy Bill Snyder, saying I missed jury duty for “Cochise County federal court”.
The caller advised that I could self-surrender and wait 14 days to see a federal judge or go to one of their FBI-mandated or accredited PR Offices and pay them in cash only and get a receipt. The caller continued that the person reporting would then take the receipt to the Sheriff's Office located at 100 Colonia de Salud in Sierra Vista and do a signature verification. (This is our actual address)
The person reporting advised the caller that he would not be paying cash to anyone and that he would go to the Sheriff's Office personally. The caller advised that two deputies would be waiting to arrest him and he would then be in jail for 14 days to see a federal judge.
The person reporting told the caller that this sounded like a scam, so he would contact the Sheriff's Office in person, to which the caller replied, "Okay, but you are going to be taken into custody on any federal property."
When the person reporting then told the caller that he knew the sheriff and would be calling him, the caller immediately hung up.
The person reporting did advise that the caller was "pretty scary sounding" and people could fall for this scam easily.
