Adios Sierra!

We were sad to say goodbye to Sierra Delgado, our San Pedro House Manager. She held the position for three years and did a great job. During her tenure, she improved the appearance of the store, modernized our software and surrounding operations, instituted special events at the store, implemented a new web store, and brought in many new items for sale. All this on top of the general tasks of managing the house, creating a volunteer schedule, training new people, reacting to issues as they occur, and more.

We really appreciate Sierra's work and her positive attitude. We miss her already!

As happens in life, we have already hired the next person to serve as San Pedro House Manager. She is Ann Hess, from San Francisco, recently living in New Mexico, and now a resident of Bisbee. By chance, all three of the people we have had in this job have lived in Bisbee. Next time you are in the store, introduce yourself to Ann and welcome her to the San Pedro House!

Report on the Butterfly Walk

FSPR docent Steve Tracey led our second butterfly walk in the gardens at the San Pedro House this last Sunday. Fourteen species were observed. Here is Steve's report:

"Sunday, a smaller group of 6 people toured the xeriscape garden around the San Pedro House in search of butterflies. We managed to find 14 species in about an hour of observing. The theme for the walk was definitely ‘blue’ as we found several of the small blue butterflies of the region including the very infrequently seen Eastern Tailed-Blue.

As we get into monsoon season will be expecting more rain, more flowers and a steady increase in butterflies so consider joining one of the upcoming walks. They occur on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:00am. We meet on the porch of San Pedro House.

A full list of species seen:
Bordered Patch
Ceraunus Blue
Checkered White
Common/White Checkered Skipper
Eastern Tailed-Blue
Eufala Skipper
Fatal Metalmark
Marine Blue
Orange Skipperling
Pipevine Swallowtail
Queen
Reakirt’s Blue
Sleepy Orange
Western Pygmy-Blue"

Report from this week's Bird Walk

Richard Bansberg sent us this report from the FSPR bird walk Wednesday:

"This morning 10 participants birded the trails at the San Pedro House and tallied 45 species. A Cactus Wren and a Phainopepla were seen at the house prior to heading out on the trails. While common in the general area these two species are seldom seen on the birding walks, maybe once or twice a year. There were lots of singing birds everywhere we walked and lots of fledgings were noted, especially Lucy’s and Yellow Warblers, Verdins, Towhees and Vermillion Flycatchers. We saw three Great Blue Herons at Black Phoebe Pond and suspected that the herons at the nesting site had fledged, but two large nestlings were still present at the nest when we walked by. Other sighting included several Lesser Nighthawks and a FOS Varied Bunting.

The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. For the months of June, July and August the walks leave at 6:00a from the BLM’s San Pedro House south of State Route 90 just west of the San Pedro River. We walk about 2.5 miles and are out for about three hours. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.

The next San Pedro River birding walk is on Wednesday, June 24 at 6:00a."

Your Pictures - Clyde Raines

This set from Clyde dates back to 2019. The river was flowing just downstream from Fairbank. Clyde's caption: "Way back in Jan 2019 I was still energetic enough to visit 3 locations along the river in one day. Seemed there was a lot of water in the river and it was clear, I can't recall what the weather was like then." Even in the midst of what is approaching a 40 year drought, there are seasons when the river is flowing. Those who have lived here for much longer than that can recall the times when the river ran most of the time with far more water that we see now.

Steve spends a lot of time along the river and we are lucky that he sends us his pictures to share here. Here is a set from February that has a number of photos of animals he was lucky to see. See the captions. Thanks, Steve!
