Some of us wondered what the story was behind the plaque at St Andrews Parish that is mounted on the wall near the entrance of the choir loft in Kino Hall. It is inscribed "In loving memory David Canales who gave his life for his country Vietnam May 21, 1966" No info was found as to who created or mounted the plaque.

Some basic information about David. He was 19 at the time of his death. He was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Air Cavalry Division (as it was called during Vietnam). He was killed during Operation Crazy Horse during a particularly violent attack on his unit's position on 21 May (official US Army documents state 22 May) 1966 at LZ Hereford in the Vinh Thanh Valley, Binh Dinh province, RVN. The fight resulted in 15 US KIA, 11 of which were from David's battalion.

David's grave is in Benson, AZ. This Memorial Day, he will have been gone for 60 years. Let's all make a vow to not forget the sacrifices made by him and all those who died or came back physically or mentally broken from all the conflicts of the past and present. As long as these men and women are remembered, they are not truly gone.

His name is found on the Vietnam Memorial Wall at the location noted below.
