Worcester County Food Bank We are a community-based non-profit organization committed to engaging, educating and leading Worcester County in creating a hunger-free community.

What We Do

Food Collection and Distribution - WCFB collects and inspects perishable and non-perishable food and distributes it through a network of 138 partner agencies to help feed hungry people living in all 60 cities and towns of Worcester County. Food Safety - WCFB trains partner agencies in food safety using a curriculum designed by a registered dietician that incorporates dates, transportat

ion, storage, sanitation, food labels, and time and temperatures. WCFB also provides the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification course, which is recognized by more federal, state, and local health jurisdictions than any other food safety program in the United States. Advocacy - WCFB believes that food is a fundamental right of all people and that hunger is an issue of social justice. WCFB is a leading advocate for promoting access to healthy food by improving the quality of school breakfast and lunch, expanding the summer food service program, and increasing funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps. These systemic and sustainable solutions support children, families, and senior citizens in being more food secure and healthy. Our Impact - Food is the most basic of human needs. Community support makes it possible for tens of thousands of people in Worcester County to count on WCFB and our network of partner agencies for their next meal. Last year, WCFB distributed 5.4 million pounds of donated food and grocery product, enough for more than 4.5 million meals. The food was distributed to 138 partner agencies in Worcester County that provided it to nearly 104,500 different people.

On August 20, 2015, Massachusetts voted to join USDA's Community Eligibility Provision Pilot, allowing Worcester Public Schools to serve school meals to all students at no cost to families for the first time. Today, CEP is part of the funding behind Massachusetts statewide Universal School Meals. Because community eligibility is tied to the local SNAP participation rate, when people lose SNAP, schools have less money to feed kids. When people can't reach DTA, they lose access to SNAP. It's a chain reaction. That's one more reason for the governor to immediately authorize DTA to hire more staff.

This is the reality facing many families across the country, including here in Worcester County.

Damarys Mejia received over $900 a month from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, for her family until her benefits were unexpectedly cut off. For weeks, she couldn’t get anyone on the phone to help. About half of the money was restored recently, but she doesn’t know why the amount was reduced or how to get back what she needs.

When people can't reach DTA for required interviews, they often lose access to SNAP even though they qualify and have followed all the rules. The simple fact is that DTA does not have enough staff to answer the phones and process submitted documents in a timely manner. We are asking Governor Healey and our state legislators to approve funding for more DTA caseworkers NOW.
