The 28th annual UMass Cancer Walk raised more than $500,000 to support cancer research and clinical trials at UMass Chan Medical School, despite the cancellation of the event due to the nor’easter which brought heavy rain and strong winds.

Behind every dollar is a story.

“I continue to fundraise so that researchers at UMass Chan can pursue better cancer treatments and help more patients become cancer-free,” said longtime UMass Cancer Walk supporter Elaine Urban.

Read more of Elaine’s story, along with other inspiring stories from the people whose lives have been touched by cancer and whose commitment is helping advance research.

Thanks to the generosity of visionary donors, UMass Chan Medical School continues to invest in exceptional faculty who are advancing research, education and innovation.

On Sept. 8, the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees approved the establishment of four new endowed chairs and the appointment of six distinguished faculty members to endowed chairs.

These endowments were made possible through the generosity of Betty Brudnick; the estate of Herman G. Berkman, PhD; the Meyers Primary Care Institute; John P. Mordes, MD, professor emeritus of medicine, and Regina M. Yando, PhD; the estates of Eileen L. Berman, EdD, and Stanley I. Berman; and UMass Memorial President and CEO Eric Dickson, MD'95, and Catherine E. Dickson, MD'93.

The Medical School now has 86 endowed chairs and professorships that help attract, support and retain outstanding faculty members whose work is shaping the future of medicine and improving lives.

The six new appointments will be celebrated during Convocation and Investiture: A Celebration of Faculty on Sept. 17.

Two interdisciplinary teams of UMass Chan Medical School scientists were awarded $45,000 each from the Dan and Diane Riccio Fund for Neuroscience for research in pain management and long-term memory storage.

“This award is a classic example of putting together people from different domains to move research forward in unexpected directions,” Andrea Reboldi, PhD, associate professor of pathology, said. “It’s great that the Riccio family is funding research that supports collaborations across departments.”

Through a screening of The Chaplain & The Doctor and a discussion with filmmaker Jessica Zitter, MD, MPH, and Chaplain Betty Clark, MDiv, attendees explored how physicians, chaplains and care teams can work together to support patients and families facing difficult medical decisions.

Made possible by the enduring generosity of donors and the Howe family, this longtime lectureship continues to create space for important conversations about ethics, dignity and the human side of medicine.
