Air Force Global Strike Command, headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, oversees the nation’s land-based intercontinental ballistic missile and bomber forces. The men and women who support that mission are not distant figures. They are our neighbors, friends and families.

The Watch offers a rare look at the people behind the mission and the responsibility they carry every day to help keep our nation and its allies secure.

A technology developed right here in Shreveport is now flying aboard the B-52 Stratofortress.

Air Force Global Strike Command has fielded IRIS, a beyond-line-of-sight communications prototype developed by Shreveport-based Outerlink Global Solutions, on multiple B-52s. The technology provides aircrews with modern connectivity designed to improve communications, mission ex*****on and operational flexibility across long-range missions. This milestone is the result of years of collaboration across our region and the Air Force enterprise.

Beginning with testing at Barksdale Air Force Base in 2022, the effort brought together Outerlink, Air Force Global Strike Command, the 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron, the 608th Air Operations Center, the 307th Bomb Wing, the B-52 System Program Office, AFWERX and other partners. BRF and its Entrepreneurial Accelerator Program have supported this work through the Commercial Capabilities Integration and Transition initiative, helping connect commercial innovation with critical Air Force modernization needs. In 2023, the effort secured AFGSC's first $26 million Strategic Funding Increase contract. Today, multiple IRIS systems are installed on B-52s and supporting training and operational employment.

This is what locally driven defense innovation can accomplish: bringing together military expertise, private-sector technology and regional partners to strengthen the B-52 and support the modernization of our nation's nuclear enterprise.
