Here’s a good explanation for why so many people in Shreveport are badmouthing this city.

When people talk trash about their hometown, they aren’t just being negative.

They’re trying to create distance between how they see themselves and how they see the place they call home.

They don’t want to be associated with a blighted town. They don’t want to feel the shame of substandard surroundings.

Think about what it would feel like if you stopped maintaining your own home. Over the years it would stop being a source of pride and become a source of shame. Something you hid. Something you distanced yourself from.

Towns are no different.

When we stop tending to our surroundings, people naturally begin a strained relationship with those surroundings. We shouldn’t blame them for that. It makes complete sense.

The question is what we do about it.

Is Highland a safe neighborhood?

The City of Shreveport regularly publishes crime statistics for each of its the thirteen police districts. The most recent available annual report is from 01/2023 to 12/2023. The total reported offenses for District #4 (Highland/Stoner Hill) during that year was 829. For District #5 (South Highlands/Broadmoor/Anderson Island) a total of 1,462 crimes were reported. And for District #6 (Southeast Shreveport) the total was 1,082. The district with the highest number of offenses was #12 (South Shreveport).

Homicide and manslaughter reports for Districts 4 & 5 were the same. District 6 had one more of each. Residential burglary offenses were 107 ( #4), 191 ( #5), 90 ( #6). Residential theft: 126 ( #4), 157 ( #5), 83 ( #6). Theft from auto: 131 ( #4), 333 ( #5), 238 ( #6). Assault & Battery: 108 ( #4), 73 ( #5), 52 ( #6).

Both Districts 5 & 6 are a larger area than Highland/Stoner Hill and have more people living there. Because census data and crime reporting are recorded within different boundaries, true statistical reporting per each neighborhood requires a lot more number crunching.

Philadelphia has its act together. This city is working well at so many levels of urbanity, from the positive attitude of its citizens to the effectiveness of its public transportation and the success of its professional sports teams. Thanks to the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for hosting a great event.

REPORT from the National Preservation Partners Network Retreat in Philadelphia.
MONDAY: The National Trust for Historic Preservation is basing their lawsuit against the proposed plan for a new White House Ballroom on the premise of "Who gets to decide what happens to this significant symbol of our government, property owned by all citizens of the United States?"
TUESDAY: The adaptive reuse of sacred spaces is an important movement across the country. In Philadelphia there is a place similar to The Highland Center called Broad Street Love (https://broadstreetlove.org) that offers a wide range of services to their community. Their tagline is "We Practice Radical Hospitality."
WEDNESDAY: Advocating for places that are deeply meaningful to the people who live there, or who have deep connections to those places, is key to their preservation. Getting in front of the issues impacting them is key their preservation..
