Today is International Overdose Awareness Day and today, we remember the lives lost to overdose, pray for the families carrying the weight of that loss, and stand in hope with those still fighting for freedom.

At the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, we see firsthand the devastating impact addiction can have on individuals and families. But we also see something greater: the life-changing power of Jesus Christ.

Through our Christ-centered Life Recovery Program, men and women are breaking free from addiction, rebuilding relationships, restoring families, and discovering the hope and purpose God has for their lives.

Addiction does not have to have the final word. Jesus does.

Recovery is possible. Healing is possible. A new life is possible.

LOOK AT GOD! Ms. Sandra is thriving!

Our team recently had the opportunity to visit with Ms. Sandra at the nursing home, and we are so excited to share that she is doing well and getting stronger!

But the good news doesn’t stop there—Ms. Sandra is now making plans to move into her very own apartment soon!

What a blessing it is to see how far she has come. From needing additional care and support to now preparing for this next step toward greater independence, God has been faithful through every part of her journey.

Ms. Sandra, your Mission Family is so proud of you! We’re celebrating this new chapter with you and praying for all God has ahead.

Today, our Mission Family mourns the loss of one of our own while celebrating a life that was completely transformed by Jesus.

Paul Lewis first came through the doors of the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission as an atheist. But God wasn’t finished writing his story.

During his time at the Mission, Paul surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, graduated from our New Beginnings Program and Ministry Intern Program, and eventually became our Kitchen Manager. His life became a testimony of the very transformation we pray for every person who walks through our doors to experience.

Paul served faithfully for years, using his own story to pour into the lives of others. Whether he was preparing meals, training students in the kitchen, encouraging a guest, or simply doing the everyday work that needed to be done, Paul understood that his work was ministry.

Jesus said in Luke 9:62, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Paul kept his hand on the plow.

No matter the work, no matter the season, he never lost sight of the vision of the Mission: changing our cities one life at a time through the healing and transformational power of Jesus Christ. He lived that vision because he had experienced that transformation for himself.

Our hearts are heavy because we will deeply miss our friend, brother, coworker, and fellow servant. But we grieve with hope.

Paul came to the Mission not believing in God. He left this earth knowing Jesus as his Savior.

And today, we have the comfort and assurance of knowing that Paul is celebrating in the presence of Jesus for all of eternity.

Well done, Paul. You kept your hand on the plow. You finished your race. You kept the faith.

Until we see you again. ❤️

We LOVE running into familiar faces out in our community!

Recently, one of our staff members ran into Shahna at work, and we couldn’t be more proud to see that she is continuing to do so well!

Shahna first came to the Mission with her daughter looking for a fresh start and a new direction. During her time with us, she committed herself to the journey ahead, graduated from our New Beginnings Program, and left the Mission in 2018 ready to begin her next chapter.

And here we are, eight years later, celebrating that she is still moving forward and thriving!

This is what lasting life change looks like. It’s not just about where someone is when they leave our doors—it’s about seeing them years later still working, growing, and building the life God has for them.

Homelessness is complex. The solution has to be comprehensive.

At the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, our goal has never been simply to put a roof over someone’s head. We want to help people build a life where homelessness no longer has a hold on their future.

That’s why our Life Recovery Program goes far beyond temporary fixes or band-aid approaches. While housing is an important part of long-term stability, we believe lasting independence requires addressing the challenges that led someone into homelessness in the first place.

Through our comprehensive, Christ-centered Life Recovery Program, our guests receive:

✅ Addiction recovery and help identifying unhealthy behaviors, habits and dependencies
✅ Individualized case management
✅ Job and vocational training
✅ Financial literacy and life skills
✅ Biblical counseling and relationship restoration
✅ Access to medical and dental care
✅ Safe shelter and nutritious meals
✅ Structure, accountability and goal-setting
✅ A community that reminds them they are loved, valued and created for a purpose

For many people coming out of homelessness, addiction, poverty or crisis, hope alone isn't enough. They need hope paired with accountability, structure, resources and someone willing to walk alongside them as they do the hard work of rebuilding their lives.

We don't measure success by how quickly someone leaves our doors. We measure it by whether they are equipped to move forward with the tools, stability and support they need to live independently and break the cycle of homelessness.

Because our mission isn't simply to help someone survive homelessness. It's to help them overcome it and step into the hope and future God has for them.
