Jeffrey Witte, fire prevention officer for the Shreveport Fire Department, spoke to Optimist Club members and guests on Patriot Day about lessons learned by fire departments after 9-11, including vital radio communications, the ICS command system, hazmat and canine teams.

We meet this Friday, Sept. 11 at Querbes grill on Patriot Day. Our guest speaker is Jeffrey Witte with the Shreveport Fire Department. He will talk about lessons learned by fire departments after 9-11.

Our combo officer installation dinner with the Bossier club is Sept. 29 at Copeland’s restaurant, 1665 E. Bert Kouns, at 6 pm.

Beat the heat and join us in air conditioned comfort at Querbes this Friday, August 14, for Optimist Club meeting.

Our speaker will be Alex Person, the new president and executive director for Junior Achievement in Shreveport.

Our club also will meet at Querbes on Friday, August 28. We need a speaker.

We will meet this Friday, July 10 at Querbes at noon. Our guest speaker is Mariam Harley, executive director of The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center.

We will NOT meet on July 24 for summer break. Our next meeting will be August 14 when Alex Person from Junior Achievement is our program.

Here are the bell ringers for this Saturday Christmas in July event at Walmart E. Bert Kouns: Albert 10-12, John 12-1, Bob 1-2, Scott 4-5 and Gary 5-6 pm. Come by and support our area youth.

We will meet tomorrow, June 26, at Querbes. Our speakers are from Plant a Seed and the Junior Optimist Club in Bossier City. They will talk about the summer camp we helped sponsor in June.

Ernestine’s summer art show is this Saturday, June 27, from 3:30-7 pm at her home, 6012 River Road Circle.

We will meet only once next month on July 10. We will NOT meet July 24 for summer break.

We need volunteers to ring bells for Christmas in July for The Salvation Army on July 11 from 10am-6 pm.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday.
We are back on schedule in June with two meetings with speakers.
We meet this Friday, June 12 at Querbes with Chad McDowell from Calvary Baptist School as our speaker.
Then on Friday, June 26, Albert and Plant a Seed will speak about their June summer camp that we helped sponsor.
A date for your July calendar. We will ring the bells for Christmas in July for The Salvation Army on Saturday, July 11 at Walmart E. Bert Kouns.
Flag Day is this Sunday, June 14, another opportunity to fly our nation’s colors.

Principal Kenneth Berg was our guest speaker last Friday and accepted the $2,000 scholarship check.
According to Berg, CCTC served 1,250 students this year. In 31 years, more than
1,000 scholarships have been given out totaling some $1.7 million since 1995.
Berg was able to announce some great news as the CCTC will move further west off the Inner Loop in the Industrial Park. With $60 million available, groundbreaking will occur in Spring 2027 with plans to move into the larger facility in the Fall of 2028. They hope to serve 2,000 students annually at the new campus.

Make sure to attend our club meeting Friday, May 8, at Querbes, as we present our annual scholarship check to Caddo Career and Technology Center. Principal Kenneth Berg will be our guest speaker and accept the check. We have sponsored a student with this award for 31 years. Daphne Garcia from Captain Shreve High School is our recipient this year. She will study to be a dental assistant at Louisiana Tech.

Also, we will accept any officer nominations for the 2026-2027 year this Friday as well. Our officer positions are President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer.

We will not meet Friday, May 22 since that is a long holiday weekend.

Our meetings next month will be on June 12 and 26 at Querbes.

Kelsey Meshell from NW La Technical Community College spoke last Friday to our members about the upcoming Bossier Optimist Club bowling tournament on June 23.

For the 31st straight year the Optimist Club of Shreveport has presented an annual scholarship to a deserving student at Caddo Career and Technical Center. This year, Miss Daphne from Captain Shreve High School received the $2,000 scholarship. She plans to be a dental assistant.
With her at the awards event are John Preston, our longest tenured Optimist member at 51 years (left) and Club President Albert Dyer.
