We are thrilled to have been awarded a grant of $50,000 from the Community Foundation of North Louisiana through their Rubye Moss Ratcliff Fund! The generous gift will be used to support our POPS (Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services) department, helping provide custom braces and artificial limbs to our kids. Thank you, Community Foundation!

Shriners Children's Shreveport received a 2026 Competitive Grant of $50,000 made possible by several funds, including the Rubye Moss Ratcliff Fund at the Foundation. Rubye Moss Ratcliff, a talented artist, grew up at 3000 Fairfield. Her father, a Mississippi native, established a successful grocery and oil business in Shreveport. After her death in 1983, Rubye left a generous $2.3 million bequest to the Community Foundation, which has since awarded over $6.4 million to organizations in our community! Congratulations, Shriners Children's Shreveport! 🎊

Last week, Shriners Children’s Shreveport staff bid a heartfelt farewell and best wishes to Chief of Staff Emeritus, Dr. Cary Mielke. After 22 years of unwavering dedication to the families, staff, and mission of Shriners Children’s, Dr. Mielke has retired from medical practice and returned to his roots in the Midwest.

Dr. Mielke officially joined the Shriners Children’s system at Shriners Children's Twin Cities in 2004, having previously completed his fellowship training at our facility in Salt Lake City. He was named chief of staff for the Twin Cities facility in 2013, where he directed the medical program with distinction before bringing his leadership and vision to Shreveport in 2018.

As chief of staff in Shreveport, Dr. Mielke guided our facility through significant changes and milestones, including our 100th anniversary, a care model transition, the launch of a Marshall, TX clinic location, outreach efforts in the Republic of Panama, and the addition of sports medicine as our third official care specialty. Through this and much more, Dr. Mielke led and inspired with his trademark humor, cheerful demeanor, and commitment to strengthening and enhancing our mission in Shreveport.

Over two decades with Shriners Children’s, Dr. Mielke’s compassion, expertise and steadfast dedication has impacted the lives of thousands of children and families, leaving a legacy that will be felt for years to come. Please join us in thanking Dr. Mielke for his service and wishing him a happy, well-deserved retirement! 💙🩺🤩

Members of the Oak Grove Congregational Methodist Church youth group have been working hard at our facility this week as part of a mission work trip! The youth traveled from southwest Louisiana for two days of service that included replacing/spreading mulch on our playground, cleaning playground equipment and toys, and detailing wheelchairs used throughout our facility. The group also collected donations of toys and snacks in advance of their trip, which they used to create goodie bags for patients and families in the clinic. We appreciate all your efforts in support of our facility!

Representatives from the Red River Street Rod Association Social Media visited our facility to present a donation of over $7,000 in proceeds from their annual car show! Now in its 52nd year, the RRSRA Auto Show brought in some 200 participants to display their hot rods, classics, and other vehicles to compete for a variety of awards and bragging rights. Over the years, the organization has donated over $45,000 to support the mission of Shriners Children’s. Thank you, RRSRA!

We are proud to announce that Jana Wilson has been selected as our Nurse of the Year for 2026! Jana’s selection is the result of nominations from her fellow nurses and staff within our facility.

Jana earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Southern University in 2012. She began her nursing career in adult medical-surgical care, where she gained vital experience in providing compassionate care for those undergoing treatment for acute conditions and/or surgery. In 2015, she was able to follow her dream of providing pediatric care when a nursing position became available at Shriners Children’s Shreveport. She quickly became an invaluable member of our nursing team, and now serves as the certified pediatric care manager for our orthopedic and spine service lines.

Jana’s peers describe her as a passionate advocate for patients and families who goes above and beyond to ensure that families receive the care and dignity they deserve. Her commitment to her team and profession serve as an inspiration each day, and her compassion extends beyond the walls of this facility. During a critical moment at her church recently, Jana stepped in without hesitation to perform CPR and help save a life. When recognized for her actions, she related “I’m just doing what I was trained to do.”

Outside of work, Jana enjoys spending time with her family – in particular granddaughter Sidney, who affectionately calls her “Dori”.

Please help us congratulate Jana on this esteemed honor!🤩👏🩺

"My favorite part of nursing is the relationships with patients, families, and my team. Being able to support kids and their families through challenging moments, alongside coworkers who truly care, and knowing the impact can last long after they leave our hospital is incredibly meaningful to me."

Thank you to all of our Shriners Children's nurses for your dedication and compassion. You remind us all of the power of nurses to make a lasting difference!
