💙💛 Building budgets—and computer confidence!

Today, Project I/O’s intermediate class put Excel to work by creating a monthly budget! Students practiced entering income and expenses, comparing planned versus actual spending, and using formulas to calculate totals and money remaining. 📊👏🏾

It’s a practical project they can adapt for everyday life!

💡 Helpful Excel tip: Make overspending easier to spot with Conditional Formatting.

If your difference column calculates Planned − Actual, select those cells, then choose:
Home → Conditional Formatting → Highlight Cells Rules → Less Than

Enter 0, choose a red fill, and click OK. Amounts below zero will highlight automatically, showing where spending went above the plan!

💙💛 We’re putting Excel to work at Project I/O!

Our intermediate computer class has been learning how to organize information, format worksheets, and use formulas to make everyday calculations easier. From grocery lists to household budgets, we’re building skills students can use beyond the classroom! 📊👏🏾

💡 Fun Excel tip: Let your spreadsheet do the math!
Type =SUM(B2:B5) into an empty cell to add the numbers in cells B2 through B5. Change one of those numbers, and your total updates automatically! ✨

🎉💻 WEEK 3 WINS AT PROJECT I/O! 💻🎉

Both of our computer-training classes put their skills into action this week!

🗂️ BASIC COMPUTER TRAINING

Our Basic learners explored files, folders, and saving. They practiced:

✅ Creating and naming folders
✅ Organizing files with File Explorer
✅ Moving, copying, renaming, and finding files
✅ Saving documents in the correct location
✅ Deleting and restoring practice files

🎨📊 INTERMEDIATE COMPUTER TRAINING

Our Intermediate learners completed their Microsoft Word flyers and began working with spreadsheets. They practiced:

✅ Proofreading and publishing a flyer as a PDF
✅ Navigating rows, columns, cells, and worksheets
✅ Creating and formatting an event budget
✅ Formatting numbers as currency
✅ Using a SUM formula to calculate totals

💡 Quick Tech Tips:

Press Windows + E to open File Explorer instantly.

In Excel, formulas always begin with an equals sign, such as =SUM(C2:C6).

🎉 ONE CLASS DOWN—AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED! 💻

Project I/O has officially completed the first Intermediate Computer Training class of September!

During our first lesson, participants learned how to organize their digital lives by creating folders, renaming and moving files, using File Explorer, and understanding the difference between local and cloud storage.

💡 TECH TRICK OF THE WEEK

Did you know you can create a new folder instantly in Windows?

Open File Explorer and press:

⌨️ Ctrl + Shift + N

A new folder will appear immediately, ready for you to name. No right-clicking or searching through menus required!

We’re proud of our participants for taking another step toward greater digital confidence. Three more weeks of learning, practicing, and growing to go!

Project I/O is hosting a FREE Community Tech Help Day to assist local residents with basic technology troubleshooting and device support.

Our volunteer team can help diagnose issues, provide basic fixes, and recommend solutions for more advanced repairs.
