okay it's Feb 2nd and it's time for black history fact #2
Today we're highlighting George Thompson Ruby it's been said that in a post-civil war era NO Black Man in Texas exercised more political power.

Born 1841 in New York Ruby started out as a teacher working for the freedman's bureau in Louisiana. When schools shutdown in Louisiana in 1866 Ruby Moved to Galveston where he helped organize local chapters of the Union League which was vital for the forward mobility of the New Republican Party.

In 1868, he was elected the leagues first state president a powerful political position. Later that year he was the first African American from Texas to attend the Republican national convention.

Ruby was first elected to Texas Senate in 1870 in a close race serving two terms 1870-71 and again in 1873. He was known for pressing hard for bills protecting the freepeople's civil rights.

With this being the first day of Black History we thought it would be great to highlight some awesome Blacks that were first's.

First up is Robert R. Church Sr.
Born June 18, 1839 in Hollysprings, Ms to the daughter of an enslaved "Malay" Malagasy Princess.

Church co-founded Solvent Savings Bank the first black owned bank in Memphis so that blacks could have access to credit for homes and business development.

After the yellow fever epidemics of 1878 and 1879 the city of Memphis was devastated and property was devalued so he bought it up with long term goals in mind.

Church also purchased the First $1,000 Municipal Bond to help Memphis recover from bankruptcy after it was reduced to a taxing district.

In 1953 in an act of revenge by Mayor Edward Hull "Bull" Crump and the Memphis Fire Department the Church home was burned to the ground for the Church families black voters rights activism. The house and surrounding neighborhood were paved and turned into a housing project for African-Americans.
