PPYD CIVIC EDUCATION SERIES DAY 1

WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, AND WHO ELECTS ITS MEMBERS?

Did you know that when Americans vote for President, they are actually helping choose a group of people called electors?

The Electoral College is the constitutional process used to elect the President and Vice President of the United States.

Here’s how it works:

1. There are 538 electors nationwide.
2. A presidential candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.
3. Each state receives electoral votes based on its representation in Congress.
4. Louisiana has 8 electoral votes.
5. Political parties generally select potential electors before the presidential election. Voters then determine which slate of electors is appointed based on the election results.

In most states, the presidential candidate who receives the most votes statewide receives all that state’s electoral votes.

NOW HERE’S YOUR CIVIC EDUCATION QUESTION:

Can a presidential candidate receive more votes from Americans nationwide and still lose the presidential election?

Drop your answer in the comments! We’ll explain it during this week’s series.
