What a packed and memorable day with EAA Chapter 586!

We kicked things off with not one, but two amazing field trips. Members had the opportunity to get an up-close look at an AT-802 fire aircraft and later tour the Contour jet, giving everyone a unique perspective on different sides of aviation.

During our chapter meeting, we were honored to hear from a special guest speaker, the station manager from Contour Airlines, who shared valuable insights into the aviation industry and career opportunities.

We also took time to celebrate several chapter members who are continuing their aviation education and pursuing their goals in the skies. A special congratulations to Corrie, who was presented with a scholarship to help support her aviation journey!

To wrap up a fantastic day, members enjoyed a BBQ lunch, celebrated a special birthday, great conversations, and the opportunity to connect with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

Days like today remind us how fortunate we are to be part of such a supportive and inspiring aviation community. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day a success!

Summer flying in high elevation airports comes with some extra challenges every pilot should respect. As temperatures rise, density altitude rises too — which means the air becomes “thinner.”

What does that mean for airplanes?
✈️ Longer takeoff rolls
✈️ Reduced climb performance
✈️ Less engine and propeller efficiency

Even if the airport elevation doesn’t seem extreme, a hot summer afternoon can make the airplane perform like it’s operating thousands of feet higher than field elevation.

Before flying:
• Calculate density altitude
• Check aircraft performance carefully
• Lean properly when applicable
• Fly during cooler morning/evening hours when possible
• Always leave yourself extra runway and extra margins

High elevation summer flying is beautiful, but it demands good planning and good decision making. Respect the altitude, respect the heat, and always fly the numbers. ☀️🛩️
