Summer flying in high elevation airports comes with some extra challenges every pilot should respect. As temperatures rise, density altitude rises too — which means the air becomes “thinner.”

What does that mean for airplanes?
✈️ Longer takeoff rolls
✈️ Reduced climb performance
✈️ Less engine and propeller efficiency

Even if the airport elevation doesn’t seem extreme, a hot summer afternoon can make the airplane perform like it’s operating thousands of feet higher than field elevation.

Before flying:
• Calculate density altitude
• Check aircraft performance carefully
• Lean properly when applicable
• Fly during cooler morning/evening hours when possible
• Always leave yourself extra runway and extra margins

High elevation summer flying is beautiful, but it demands good planning and good decision making. Respect the altitude, respect the heat, and always fly the numbers. ☀️🛩️

A pretty special day at the airport! Local father and son duo got the chance to take to the skies with Don the other day, making memories and sharing the joy of aviation together. ✈️

Experiences like this are what make our aviation family so special — passing down knowledge, creating unforgettable memories, and inspiring a love of flight for generations to come. Huge thanks to Don for making it happen!

Some nights at the airport just hit different ✨✈️

Fun fact: On a clear dark night, the human eye can see around 5,000 stars… but at any given moment, there are only about 5,000 airplanes in the entire sky worldwide. Makes you realize just how small we are under a sky that’s been here long before aviation ever was.

Blue runway lights below, endless stars above — two worlds pilots never get tired of chasing. 🌌🛩️

What an incredible turnout at this morning’s pancake breakfast! 🥞✈️

We loved seeing so many people come out to support the event and enjoy a beautiful morning at the airport. A huge thank you to all the pilots who flew in — the ramp was full of amazing airplanes and smiling faces all morning long!

Events like this are a reminder of how strong and welcoming our aviation community truly is. From volunteers flipping pancakes to families exploring the aircraft, it was a great day all around.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, flew in, and helped make the morning such a success. We can’t wait to do it again! 💙☀️🛩️

Here’s a map of KSOW to help make your arrival smooth and easy! We can’t wait to welcome pilots, families, and aviation friends from all around for a great morning of food, airplanes, and community.

🛩️ Field Elevation: 6,416’
🛩️ Pattern Altitude: 7,200’

Please be sure to check density altitude before your flight — warmer temperatures and high elevation can make a big difference in aircraft performance.

Breakfast starts at 7 AM — come hungry and enjoy a fun morning at the airport!

See you Saturday at Show Low Regional Airport! ☀️
