This November we will be highlighting the stories of different Basque veterans. First is Luis “Lou” Berriochoa!

Born in Dietrich, Idaho, in 1923 to Adrian and Celestina Berriochoa, Luis enlisted in the Army in January of 1943, just after he had finished his first semester at the University of Idaho. His talent of skiing landed him in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, a group of elite skiers who trained to operate in mountainous territory.

In the pictures below, Luis can be seen partaking in training exercises at Camp Hale, Colorado, an Army base in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. There, the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division were trained in mountain warfare techniques, including mountain climbing, alpine skiing, and cold weather survival. Luis served two tours in the European Theater before being wounded in Northern Italy. By the time he recovered from his injury, the war had ended. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, but was always most proud of his Combat Infantryman Badge. After he was discharged from the Army he returned to Idaho to finish his schooling, and after a brief time living and working in Mexico, settled in Mountain Home. Luis, a founding member of Euzkaldunak, Inc., also helped found the Mountain Home Ski Club.
