Our Lean In Latina Surge Network is excited about this new leadership program for girls! Great work Lean In!!
After 10 years of fighting for women's equality, it's never been clearer that we need to lift up our girls. That’s why we’re launching —a leadership program to help girls see themselves as leaders in a world that often tells them they’re not. We want to equip more girls to be self-assured, resilient, and inclusive everyday leaders. And we want the world to remove the obstacles in girls’ way and encourage them to lead on their own terms.
At the heart of Lean In Girls is a curriculum for girls and young teens who identify with the girlhood experience. With a balance of strength-building activities and real talk on important topics like bias and allyship, participants learn to embrace their leadership superpowers and reject stereotypes about what girls can’t do. Research shows that this level of awareness is good for girls. When girls know how to push back against unfair treatment, they are less likely to internalize negative messages or blame themselves when they experience bias. And when girls take positive risks and learn new skills, they can feel a powerful sense of agency and accomplishment.
We're also calling the adults in girls’ lives to take action. This starts with blowing up the traditional “command and control” definition of leadership and celebrating all the ways that girls lead every day. It means talking honestly with the girls in our lives about everything they’re up against. It means making sure we don't inadvertently signal that girls shouldn't speak up or assert themselves, which research shows we often do. We also need to actively challenge stereotypical gender norms in our homes and classrooms by mixing up gendered toys, chores, and activities and encouraging girls to pursue stereotypical “guy things” like gaming and robotics.
These steps may seem small, but they can help fundamentally shift the way girls see themselves and their possibilities. For more tips on supporting the girls in your life, visit www.leaningirls.org. And check out Raising Lean In Girls, our new Facebook community that provides a space for caregivers of teen girls to connect and support each other.
Together, we can empower girls to lead their way—and our schools, communities, and the world will be better for it.
