Shorewood Nature Preserve Volunteer Events

The Friends of Shorewood Nature Preserve and Surfrider Foundation Milwaukee are hosting a volunteer day at Shorewood Nature Preserve this Saturday, September 20 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.

Volunteers will remove buckthorn and honeysuckle and pick up litter from the beach before they plant and water 1,000 native dune grass plugs.

Marek Landscaping, LLC (the same contractor that performs land management at Atwater Beach) will bring their tractor mounted chipper down the slope for their team to operate while volunteers cut and drag brush.

If you can't make it to this event, The Friends plan to host another event on Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm to remove invasive species at the Preserve.

Quiz Night is one of the most popular (and revealing) SMC meetings of the year!

Doors open at 6:00PM, dinner is at 6:30, quizzing starts at 7.

An American is traveling around England, and stops for the night in a small little village at an old fashioned pub and hotel, called the Spanish Inn, and after getting settled in, he goes down to the bar to have a drink. The owner and bartender starts chatting with him, and tells him: “I have a magical chicken who is very smart and likes to play trivia contests, and for $100, I’ll let you compete against my chicken in a trivia contest, and if you win, my magic chicken will grant you one wish.” The American says “sure” he’ll take on the chicken, and here’s the $100. The barman brings out the hen from the back room, the contest begins, and the hen wins decisively. The hen speaks perfect uppercrust English, and answers every question accurately. The American is amazed at what he’s seen, and tells the innkeeper he hadn’t anticipated he'd see anything like this in a little hotel like this. “Well, you know,” says the innkeeper “no one expects the Spanish Inn quiz wish hen.”

SMC meetings are open to all and are held every first and third Wednesday of the month at Hubbard Park Lodge. Meetings start at 6:00 (drinks 6:00, dinner 6:30, program 7:00). There is no charge for those who desire to attend at 7:00 just to participate in Quiz Night.

Reminder - Shorewood Men's Club East Egg Hunt Tomorrow!

The Shorewood Men’s Club is again hosting an Easter egg hunt for children Newborn-12 years old in Hubbard Park. The lawn and hills will be divided by ages and covered with over 10,000 eggs and the Easter Bunny will be there to say hello and pose for pictures!

The hunt is staged by age: Newborn-3, 4-7, 9-12 and starts promptly at 9:00 am. The hunters work very fast so don’t arrive late. It lasts about 20 minutes and eggs are spread around for access to all. Have the kids bring their own bucket or basket for their eggs. Parking is limited and it fills up fast. No cars will be allowed past the bridge.
