As a Shorewood resident, parent of a second grader at Lake Bluff, and teacher at Shorewood High School, I support the proposed operational referendum. Our children deserve to have an enriching educational experience delivered by caring, compassionate, experienced, innovative and highly educated professionals. A yes vote is one thing that we can do to show our support for the students and staff of the Shorewood School District.

Please vote YES for the referendum on April 4. I am a resident of Shorewood, a proud teacher in the district, and a parent of two Shorewood students. This referendum is vital to protect current student programming and continue our tradition of excellence.

Please join me in voting YES for the referendum. Shorewood's schools can serve our students best when we have the funds to meet their needs, encourage their creativity, and provide them with unique learning experiences. I'm a parent of two graduates of Shorewood's schools, a teacher in my 16th year here, in my 8th year as the SEA president, and a resident who knows intimately what our schools mean to our community.

Shorewood Teaching Staff - The SEA's annual recertification vote ends on November 22nd at noon. If you have not yet voted, please take a few moments to do so. Remember, not voting counts as a “no” vote.

Recertification is November 2 – 22, 2021. The state agency that administers labor law in Wisconsin requires local associations that seek to remain legally recognized bargaining representatives in a school […]

Tonight’s Board meeting starts at 7pm. For those planning to attend the meeting in person, please note that the location for the meeting has been changed. The Board plans to meet in SIS’s orchestra room 236 where socially distanced seating will be available for a limited audience.

The District discourages the public and/or media from attending the meeting in person at its noticed location due to active health and safety concerns associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic public health emergency. Masks are required for all individuals (ages 2 and over) in all District build...

Our presence matters! Stand in solidarity with Shorewood Teachers by joining us TOMORROW at 5:15pm outside of Shorewood Intermediate School. Together we will advocate for an equitable and transparent salary system that benefits all stakeholders in the Shorewood community. We will meet outside of SIS’s front door and side track doors to share our concerns with our Board members and Administration as they arrive. Mask up and grab one of our premade posters or make your own!

The SEA looks forward to seeing you all there!

A message to the board written by Scott Brown, School Counselor at Shorewood High School.

Dear Shorewood School District Board Members and Administrators:

My name is Scott Brown, and I am one of the school counselors at Shorewood High School. This will be my sixth year within the Shorewood School District.

I want to express my concern and opposition to the elimination of steps and lanes within the teacher salary schedule. After an incredibly difficult year, in which teachers and other staff were asked to figure out how to teach and connect with students in a virtual world, with little support or guidance, taking away this bedrock of financial stability for teachers is, frankly, very disappointing. Eliminating this salary structure will continue to devalue the profession of education, making it more difficult to attract and retain talented teachers who can serve students with diverse needs.

How can a new teacher see a way to advance if this salary structure is eliminated? What incentive does a new or veteran teacher have to stay in this district if they cannot see a way to move up financially, if battles over salary become a recurring issue every year? Education as a profession has already become a far less valued career; fewer and fewer people want to become teachers. Actions like this make recruitment and retention even harder. Steps and lanes need to be a budget priority, not a last minute, year-to-year decision.

When I chose to leave Nicolet High School for Shorewood High School six years ago, a huge part of my willingness to leave another good district was the attractive and stable salary schedule within the Shorewood School District. Personally, eliminating steps this year will affect my family negatively, particularly as the cost of goods and services rises post lockdown.

This potential move by the school board does not engender loyalty within the district, nor does it respect teachers and staff. Honestly, it is tiring having to continually advocate for this profession in a post Act 10 world, to ensure that it receives the societal respect it deserves. Ultimately, I urge the school board to rescind this proposal and reinstate steps and lanes. I also urge the school board and district administrators to make steps and lanes a priority within the budget each and every year. Doing so will continue to make the school district an attractive place to work.

Sincerely,

Scott Brown
