I keep searching for the good that has come out of the bad and the best I can come up with, is that my time with Harry made a difference. It made a difference because he wasnโt forgotten in a field any longer. He got veterinary care that he so desperately needed. He went on to be in horse (donkey) shows and events, then to another farm that loved him, Ruthie and Josephine until they fell on hard times with family health. I oversaw a new home, interviewed only the BEST people, vet-checked them all. Made sure they were ensured softness and love. And they all had that.
But, sadly Harry had been struggling repeatedly with choke, which is terrifying to watch. It was precipitated by an episode of pneumonia that likely did some extenuating damage and scarring. He passed away Tuesday April 7th and was surrounded by those who cared for him. Itโs taken me a bit to shareโฆ and my heart is breaking. We estimate he was at least 30 years old, but given his history before me, he had a rough start.
I am so blessed to have met and known this creature. He was a jack we gelded and I refused to separate from his bonded mate Ruthie.
Ruthie remains at Animal Farm Foundation with her daughter Josephine and they are adjusting. I had planned to see him the day before he passed, but clearly I missed the opportunity. That kills me.
Hopefully he knows I did my best to serve him well. I owe this herd of donkeys he sired so much. Harry was the quiet, sentient leader that helped change my life. All my donkeys have taught me so much. I will forever be indebted to each of them.
โฆ which makes tomorrow even HARDER in light of this happening. Dom & Louie will be heading to Higher Ground Farm to start their next chapter. I hope and pray this is the right decision and will trust in the faith of good people. I have to. My heart just hurts a lilโ extra today. ๐๐
