This week is National Police Week, a time when we pause to recognize the men and women who serve and protect our communities each day. It is also a time to honor and remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty — Detective John Weiss and Officer Armand Vancleave Sr. Their service, courage, and dedication will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace Sergeant Edbrooke.

It has been 4 years now since Sgt. Edbrooke's courageous battle with cancer came to a close. We continue to honor his remarkable legacy and the profound impact he has on our department every day. Let us keep his fellow officers, friends and family in our thoughts and prayers today.

Today, we pause to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Officer Nick Rodman — a hero who gave everything in the line of duty.

Officer Rodman responded without hesitation to a call of gunfire during a domestic incident, answering the call to protect others in their most vulnerable moments. While joining fellow officers in pursuit of a suspect, his patrol vehicle — lights and siren activated — was struck during a turn. Despite the swift efforts of his brothers and sisters in uniform to get him to the hospital, Officer Rodman succumbed to his injuries after a courageous fight.

But Officer Rodman’s legacy is not defined solely by how he died — it is defined by how he lived.

Beyond the badge, Nick Rodman was a protector in every sense of the word. He quietly went above and beyond for victims of domestic violence, delivering food, clothing, and essential items to those in need at the Center for Women and Families. His compassion created a tradition of service that continues today in his honor — a lasting reminder that true heroism is found not only in moments of danger, but in acts of kindness no one else sees.

He leaves behind a loving wife, two children, and a proud family dedicated to service — including his father, a retired officer, and his brother, who continues to serve. Their strength reflects the same courage Officer Rodman showed every day.

We will never forget his sacrifice.

We will always carry forward his legacy.

And we will continue to serve with the same heart, bravery, and compassion that defined Officer Nick Rodman.

End of Watch — but never out of our hearts.

Today Shively FOP Lodge 17 would like to take the time and remember our fallen Brother, Detective John Weiss, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on this date in 1986. Detective Weiss was tragically shot in the line of duty, but was able to return fire and wound the suspect. Please take a moment to remember Detective Weiss and think of his family and friends he left behind.

Today, we pause to honor and remember Officer John Robert Weiss on the anniversary of his line of duty death.
Officer Weiss gave his life in service to his community, paying the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the badge with courage, integrity, and dedication. His commitment to protecting others reflects the very best of what it means to serve.
The Shively Police Department holds Officer Weiss and his family in the highest honor and deepest gratitude. We recognize the profound sacrifice made not only by John, but by those who loved him. Their strength and continued support of our department are a testament to his lasting legacy.
Though time may pass, we will never forget Officer Weiss. His memory remains woven into the fabric of this department. We carry his spirit with us each day as we serve, and we find comfort in knowing he is watching down over us.
Today and always, we remember. We honor. We are grateful.
End of Watch — Never Forgotten.
