Yesterday the Department of Public Health announced grant awards to 13 communities in the Nashoba Valley region to stabilize our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) until UMass Memorial Health’s Satellite Emergency Facility is opened in Groton.

I was proud to fight with the entire North Central delegation to secure this funding in a supplemental budget this year and am grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration's continued engagement with our Fire Departments and local EMS.

Full award amounts for communities in the Worcester and Middlesex District:

Groton - $999,051
Townsend - $362,451
Shirley - $341,261
Leominster - $217,619
Ashby - $195,750
Lunenburg - $165,529

Today, Local 4358 joins the fire service community across Massachusetts and beyond in honoring the six brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice at the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse Fire 26 years ago.

We remember:
• Lieutenant Thomas Spencer
• Lieutenant Timothy Jackson
• Lieutenant James Lyons
• Firefighter Paul Brotherton
• Firefighter Jeremiah Lucey
• Firefighter Joseph McGuirk

These men answered the call without hesitation and gave their lives in service to others. Their courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to duty will forever stand as a testament to what it means to be a firefighter.

Today, we pause to reflect, to honor their memory, and to support the families, friends, and brothers and sisters who continue to feel their loss. The legacy of the Worcester Six lives on in every firehouse, every training evolution, and every firefighter who wears the badge with pride.

May we never forget their sacrifice.
May we always strive to be worthy of their example.

Tonight, the Northern Lights made a rare appearance over Shirley and the surrounding communities — faint to the eye but beautifully captured through the lens of a camera.

This photo, taken from right outside the Shirley MA Fire Department Headquarters, shows the glow of the aurora above the President’s Building (George Frost Building) — a perfect reminder of the quiet beauty that surrounds our small town.
