Home Depot is looking to open a large warehouse and distribution center in Yaphank, with the help of tax breaks.

Brookhaven Logistics Center, applied to bring in Home Depot as a subtenant for a proposed $157 million building. Home Depot has requested tax breaks from the Town of Brookhaven to equip the facility.

If the deal is approved, Home Depot would lease the yet-to-be-built, 414,000-square-foot building for 15 years, according to the application.

New York City generates a disproportionate share of New York State’s tax revenue roughly 45–50% of the total collected statewide. As you know that money is put into the state budget and distributed in large part across counties, supporting communities far beyond the five boroughs.

So when Albany leans on that revenue to prop up many struggling districts not in NYC, expand spending, or vote itself higher salaries, it would be wise to remember where much of that money comes from. If you’re going to milk the state’s primary cash cow to balance the books elsewhere, don’t act surprised when that cow needs a new barn. An economic engine that funds the state deserves reinvestment not neglect.

It is wrong to ask hardworking New Yorkers living outside of New York City to shoulder the cost of the City's fiscal mismanagement. Bad financial decisions should not be rewarded by shifting the burden onto families and communities who are already struggling with high costs. I strongly urge the Governor to reconsider this NYC bailout and instead focus on ways to bring help to ALL New Yorkers who are struggling on a daily basis, just to make ends meet.
