Playboard of Shirley The Playboard aims to connect, strengthen and engage Shirley families, celebrate our town, and host play-based seasonal events. The Playboard is now defunct.

The Play Board of Shirley, which served as an arm of the Shirley Charitable Foundation, worked with the Shirley Educational Foundation, the Ayer Shirley PTO, Shirley's Safe Routes to School program, the Lura A. White Elementary School student council and school council, and other local charitable organizations and businesses to fundraise toward its goal of improving the Lura A. White Elementary (L

AW) School playground, and to provide other safe, fun places and opportunities for play and improved health for children and adults. The organization earned Shirley the status of "Playful City USA" 10 years in a row. The application process for receiving the "Playful City USA" designation included a number of requirements, including having a committee set up to oversee play options for children, a complete audit of the town’s public play spaces, and holding at least one special free “Play Day” a year. The Annual Day of Play was held around the time of the Ayer Shirley Educational Foundation's Holdenwood Trail Run in late Sept. The event was free and all-volunteer, but did raise some money toward the Playboard's playground and Day of Play funds through raffles. If any group or organization would like to carry the mantle of the Playboard and its good works, please send us a note and we will transfer the administration of this page, which now only posts various kid-friendly events in our area.

Looking for some family fun Saturday night? It’s time to kick up your heels to support our historic Center Town Hall at a community barn dance!

Whether you’re a pro dancer or have two left feet, this night is all about coming together to support CTH, upgrades to our facility, and programming. Sliding scale entry for all.

Interested in getting involved further? The Center Town Hall Committee is a small group of volunteers who take care of the building, work with the Town to seek appropriate capital funds or grants for repair & maintenance, and fundraise by hosting events. There are many ways to help preserve and improve this iconic building! And, anyone can rent it for events!

Please join us for kids colonial games at the Shirley Historical Society’s Salute to the Minutemen, today, April 13th, from 2-4 on Shirley Center Common!

Besides hoop rolling and ball and cup fun, there will be lincoln logs, a real log to cut with a two man saw, butter churning, drop spindle spinning, candle making, spring seeds to identify, whittled brooms to check out, and large live oxen to learn about.

At 2:30 there will be a colonial music concert inside the Meetinghouse.

At 3:00 there will be a slide lecture that explains why the Shirley Minutemen marched off towards Concord and Lexington.

At 3:30 a descendant of one of the Shirley men will read the names of our Minuteman and we will have a musket salute.

The event is sponsored by the Shirley Historic Society in honor of our Nation's 250th birthday. Funding support comes from the Shirley Cultural Council.

Help needed!! The Council on Aging is in dire need of drivers for their Loaves and Fishes orders.

There are 21 homes of different ages. Many of these homes the Shirley Friendship Fund helped at Christmas time. Often there is at least 6 bags of groceries.The mart van can't hold all these orders. They are looking for drivers that could pick up and deliver the orders.Please call Kristen the COA directer at 978 425-1390. Thank you!!

The Shirley Friendship Fund is requesting our help to bring a bit of holiday cheer to the seniors in our community. Along with a holiday food basket that includes a $75 grocery gift card, the Friendship Fund distributes holiday gift bags to the seniors in need. The Friendship Fund uses their funds for the food baskets and gift cards but relies on volunteers to shop and donate the gift bags.

If you have the means and are willing to sponsor a gift bag worth $30-$40 please contact Doreen Quintiliani this week (see contact info below). She will supply the gift bag on December 6th, you will shop for items (listed below), and she'll collect it back from you, filled, by Saturday, December 14th.

This is a wonderful way to engage children in acts of kindness this season by supporting those in need in our community! The Shirley Friendship Fund lends incredible support~ please visit https://shirleyfriendshipfund.org/ for more information on their programs.
