Collective bargaining is more necessary now than ever.

The protests across the country show power in numbers, how we are stronger than the sum of our parts. Negotiating, as a collective, the standards around raises, promotions, and layoffs is our right as workers. Self-determination is at the heart of the equity work we have undertaken as an organization. Asking for what we need is one thing, bargaining for it as a group is another.

Once we clear this hurdle of voting to create our Union, we will be living workplace democracy in a new way. Our Union will serve to lift up the voices of each and every worker and allow their experiences and knowledge to shape our workplace. Having a bargaining survey, an elected bargaining committee, and the structure of our Union will provide the space to have both the flexibility and certainty necessary to thrive and be cared for in our workplace.

The lack of clarity around the continued closure of the office is just one issue in a long line of examples where decisions that impact workers long term were made without them. The “re-opening” committee had as much responsibility & work, and as little power, as committees always have at CASA of Oregon.

By forming a Union with CWA Local 7901, the staff, as a group, will be able to negotiate - from a place of real power - the expectations of our leadership and work conditions.

Community development work demands collectivism, Unionizing with CWA provides us with this collective structure.

This is what workplace democracy looks like! Congrats to the workers of Causa Oregon who just elected their Bargaining Committee.
