This is why we love our sailing community: This weekend someone climbed the top of a mast for a friend, another literally gave the shirt off his back. Helping each other is just what sailors do.

✨Sailor Spotlight: Rick Enslen 📸

If you’ve ever admired the incredible sailing photos from our regattas, chances are you’ve seen Rick’s work. In fact, most of the photos on this page were taken by Rick. Always out on the water with his camera in hand, Rick captures the energy, beauty, and emotion of sailing like no one else. And while he’s behind the lens most often, Barb Singhaus is also known for snapping fun shots from her phone during races. Between the two of them, they make sure our fleet always has memories to look back on.

Rick’s sailing story began when Marcia, who used to sail in San Diego, said she missed being on the water. Together they took classes, bought their first boat, a Capri 26 from Atwood in 1993. There they met great friends like the Lenharts, Morgans, and many others, as they found themselves part of the F Dock family. From the Capri, they moved up to a Catalina 28 (today known as Kraken), and eventually custom ordered their beloved Dana, Kalani, A boat they discovered after a conversation with Hoop at the bar. That chat led them to fly out, tour the plant, test sail one, and custom order Kalani. The boat was personally commissioned by Don Kohlman, the company president and a crew member on a winning America’s Cup boat.

Rick and Marcia both joined Wednesday night races, crewing with friends like Fritz Koltermann, Joe Sirgo, and Bob Kuchner. In fact, Rick’s very first Harvest Moon Regatta was with Fritz back in 1994 or 1995

When he wasn’t racing, Rick turned to photography as a way to stay connected to the action on the water. “When I didn’t have a ride, it still let me join the fun. I always try to share my photos — and who doesn’t enjoy seeing themselves under sail?” His favorite photo? “The next one. Every time I bring the viewfinder to my eye, I think, this could be the one.”

As for his favorite Harvest Moon memories? Rick says it’s seeing the family groups out there, kids learning to sail, parents passing on the tradition, and everyone enjoying the water together. That’s what makes the event so meaningful.

From capturing thrilling race shots to quiet family moments, Rick’s lens preserves the true spirit of sailing at Atwood. We can’t wait to see what he captures this year!

Thank you, Rick (and Barb!), for giving us all the gift of memories under sail.

✨Join us in celebrating Rick Enslen, whose story is woven into the history of the 75th Harvest Moon Regatta.
