HISTORY OF THE SALVATION ARMY IN TEXAS

The Salvation Army in Texas was started by an Italian Naval Captain named Adam Janelli. There he attended one of the meetings and was so touched by the message that he became one of the most unassuming Salvation Army personalities Texas and the United States have ever known. In 1888, Janelli came to America and settled in Dallas, Texas. One day, the rough citizens of the then frontier town, were startled out of their composure when Janelli, wearing his Salvation Army uniform, took up a position on a downtown street corner and began preaching. People were finding Christ. Eager to get The Salvation Army established in Texas, Janelli would write letters to General William Booth in London asking that Officers be sent to Texas. His letter barrage got so thick that the official word was given, and The Salvation Army of Texas opened in 1889. Janelli gave both material and spiritual help to the poor and homeless, and to the people of Dallas, he became known as “Mr. Salvation Army.” The people of Dallas could not recall a time that they did not see Janelli in his uniform. Many people doubted that he had any other clothes in his possession. Today, The Salvation Army in Texas is thriving through the support of people like you. Currently, in Texas, we have more than 155 Officers; all of whom are ordained ministers; more than 1,600 employees and thousands of volunteers, all committed to furthering the mission of The Salvation Army and helping those in need in Jesus’ name. The Salvation Army in Sherman has been serving the whole of Grayson County since 1941. Services include; worship services, adult and youth programming, financial assistance, Family Thrift store, disaster services, food and clothing assistance and emergency shelter.

🍩 The Salvation Army Lassies stepped onto the front lines of WWI with one mission: bring comfort where it was most needed.

A warm doughnut became a reminder that someone cared, and that one act of love has rippled through generations.

Today, hundreds of families across The Salvation Army find comfort, support, and hope through our programs.

🍩 National Donut Day celebrates kindness that still changes lives.

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:7

At The Salvation Army, we live that out every day, serving families in crisis, walking with people in recovery, feeding neighbors who are hungry, and offering hope to anyone who needs a place to rest and rebuild.

Because love isn’t just something we feel, it’s something we do…together.

National Donut Day is this Friday, June 5!
More than a century ago, the “Donut Lassies” entered WWI huts with hands full of flour, sugar, and the honest intention to lift the spirits of the soldiers who were far from home. Against all odds, that small act of kindness made a lasting difference.

On June 7, 1938, The Salvation Army first celebrated National Doughnut Day as a fundraiser during the Great Depression to support families facing hardship. It was a wonderful act that mirrored and honored the legacy of those courageous women.

Today, at The Salvation Army, we carry this purpose forward each day, meeting local needs with love and compassion through our food pantries 🍽️, food parcel services 📦, and mobile food pantries 🚚.

A simple recipe in action.
A lasting impact.

Because from the very beginning, the first ingredient was love.

Did you know that The Salvation Army’s summer camps have been around almost as long as The Salvation Army itself?

The first official summer camp was the “Fresh Air Camp” in Kansas City, and the oldest existing camp was established in 1901 in Camp Lake, Wisconsin.

The rest has been history, serving children across the nation and providing them a summer full of fresh air, sunshine, friendship, ministry, and character-building activities. ☀️
