Lion President Jennifer Rowe called the Sherman Noon Lions meeting to order Wednesday. Lion Jeff Austin led the opening prayer. Lion Gary Park led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Words of Wisdom. The weekly 50/50 drawing was won by Lion Barbara Sloan. Since she did not draw the Ace of Spades, she wins “absolutely nothing”. Lion President Rowe announce that the Annual Installation Banquet will be on June 28th. She also updated us on the upcoming Golf Tournament on June 8th and the duties needed. Lion David Stone was introduced by President Rowe. His program today is about Memorial Day. He told the group that many people don’t know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Veterans Day honors all of the living men and women who have served our country in military service. Memorial Day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. The origin of Memorial Day is interesting. Although Abraham Lincoln had asked Robert E. Lee to serve as the General to lead the Union, he declined choosing to support the Confederate agendas. Lee was a highly revered southern gentleman. After the Civil War ended, May 30th was proclaimed as Decoration Day by Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, John A Logan for those who died in the Civil War. The Civil War, which ended in 1865, claimed more lives in US history than any conflict. Interestingly, many died from disease rather than battle. National cemeteries were established. In the late 1860’s, Americans in various towns began holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers. They decorated their graves with flowers and recited prayers. On the first Decoration Day, 5000 participants decorated the graves, both Union and Confederate, at Arlington National Cemetery. Eventually, the name of Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day to remember the fallen soldiers from all wars. The date of Memorial Day was changed by Congress to the last Monday in May to provide a three-day weekend. After answering questions, Lion President Rowe thanked Lion Stone for the program. Pictured are Lion David Stone and Lion President, Jennifer Rowe. Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world with over 1.4 million members and in over 200 countries. She did not draw the Ace of Spades, so she wins “absolutely nothing”! Lion David Stone introduced the speaker, Lion Marty Richardson. Lion Richardson is on the Board of Directors for the Julien C. Hyer International Youth Camp for Lions District 2 E2. She has also served as the Camp Nurse for the campers while at Lake Texoma for several years. She explained to the group that the camp is named in honor of Lion Judge Julien C Hyer. He was a Lions Club International President, an attorney, husband, father, theologian, soldier, judge and writer. During his time as Judge Advocate during WWII, he participated in the prosecution of war criminals during the Nuremberg trials. After which, he wished to create an exchange program that would create peace and understanding among people. He felt that the youth of the world is where it needed to begin. The camp was named in his honor. There are 85 Lions Youth Camps worldwide, 10 in the United States. We are the only one in Texas. The Camp lasts five weeks – from the last weekend in June through first weekend in August. They are in Texoma one of those weeks where they get to know other campers from 12 different countries. The campers spend a week in different Texas areas and learn so much about the US, Texas and each other. There are many activities for the campers. They build strong friendships that will continue even when they return to their country. After answering questions, Lion President Rowe thanked Lion Marty for her program. Lion President Jennifer Rowe called the Sherman Noon Lions meeting to order Wednesday. Lion Kent Newtown led the opening prayer. Lion Gary Park led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Words of Wisdom. The group sang Happy Birthday to Lion Stone who happens to have had his birthday on Cinco de Mayo. The weekly 50/50 drawing was won last week by Lion Cole Tacker. Lion Jennifer Rowe presented him with the winner's check. Lion David Stone, presented our program entitled, "The Real Cinco de Mayo". He said that most people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. It is not. That would actually be September 16th. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1810, a Roman Catholic Priest, who had been sent to the town of Delores, called for independence. Politically, there were two sides who radically disagreed. Two leaders claimed to be president and two systems of government were set up. During this turmoil, Mexico lost 50% of it's land mass to the United States in the Mexican-American war in 1848. Mexico's financial situation caused them to borrow money from Spain, France and England. In 1861, Mexico declared a moratorium on repayments. In response, France to send 6000 soldiers, who were better equipped to Mexico City. On the way, in the town of Puebla, the Mexican army of 2000 rag-tag soldiers prevailed. The victory boosted the Mexican army's morale and national pride. The French did go on to Mexico City and installed Emperor Maximilian as the ruler. In 1866, with the help of the United States, the Mexican army expelled and executed Maximilian. The British reconsidered after their losses. Stone compared the Battle of Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill of the American Revolution to the determination of the outnumbered Mexicans defending their rights. Mexican President, Benito Juarez declared the May 5th, the anniversary of the battle of Puebla, would be a national holiday. Stone went on the tell that the first Cinco de Mayo celebrations did not include margaritas. Those were invented in Dallas, Texas in the 1940's when 7-Eleven Stores started making Slurpees. At Mariano's Mexican Cuisine, Mariano Martinez and his friend Frank Adams adapted a soft serve ice cream machine to make margaritas. The frozen margaritas became popular in the '50's and by 1970 had surpassed the martini as the most popular American cocktail. After answering questions, Lion President Rowe thanked Lion Stone for his interesting program. Pictured are Lion President, Jennifer Rowe and Lion David Stone. Holcomb told the group that they are excited to again have Dino Days this summer. The exhibit is designed to get kids to the museum to learn throughout the summer. Stuart Holcomb, the director, says that attendance spikes in the summer because of Dino Days, and it is a topic that everyone can be drawn too. The full-size T-Rex replica will be back, as well as several other dinosaurs and ice age creatures. The exhibit will also include actual fossils that have been dug up and possibly some actual bones. The museum also houses three oil-on-wood paintings known as the Muses by Texas artist James Swann, that were installed in 1934. They are possibly the only example of WPA art in Grayson County.
