Not every kid who plays soccer will go pro. ⚽
Not every child taking piano lessons will become a musician. 🎹
Not every little dancer will end up on a stage. 💃

And that’s not the point.

That soccer team might be where they learn teamwork.
Those piano lessons might teach them patience.
That dance class might help them find their confidence.
That art project they spent hours on might teach them to think creatively.

Sometimes we’re so focused on what our kids might become that we miss what they’re learning along the way.

Childhood doesn’t have to be a résumé-building competition.

Let them try things. Let them enjoy things. Let them discover things.

The experience itself can be the achievement. 💛

“Fine.”

“What did you do today?”
“Nothing.”

Sound familiar? 😂

Getting teens to open up usually isn’t about asking MORE questions. It’s about asking DIFFERENT ones.

💬 6 simple swaps to try:

Instead of “How was school?”
👉 “What was the best part of your day?”

Instead of “What did you do today?”
👉 “What’s something that made you laugh today?”

Instead of “Did you finish your homework?”
👉 “What’s the most annoying thing you’re working on right now?”

Instead of “How are your friends?”
👉 “Who did you hang out with today?”

Instead of “Why are you so stressed?”
👉 “What’s taking up the most space in your head lately?”

Instead of “How did the game go?”
👉 “What was the highlight, and what would you do differently?”

A small change in how we start a conversation can open the door to a much bigger one.

And not every conversation has to turn into a lesson. Sometimes they just want to feel heard. 💛

We teach kids to be polite. But are we teaching them to speak up?

To say “I disagree” respectfully.
To ask questions when something doesn’t make sense.
To say “no” without feeling guilty.
To admit when they need help.
To stand up for someone who isn’t being treated fairly.
To share an opinion even when nobody else agrees.

Respect and having a voice are not opposites. Young people need to learn both.

Because the goal isn’t to raise a generation that simply follows directions.

It’s to raise one that knows when to speak, when to listen, and when to stand for something. 💛

At some point, helping a young person means doing less for them.

Let them order for themselves.
Make the phone call.
Talk to the teacher or coach.
Solve the awkward situation.
Make a decision.
Mess something up.
Figure out what to do next.

It can be faster to step in.

But every time they handle something themselves, they collect a little more evidence: "I can do hard things without someone doing them for me."

That's how confidence becomes real.

Not because someone kept telling them they were capable.

Because they got the chance to prove it to themselves.

Communication.
