🏃‍♀️⛰️ Friends helping friends in the Bighorns! ⛰️🏃‍♂️

For many years, the Bighorn Trail Run has been a tremendous supporter and advocate for Black Mountain Nordic. They’ve championed our mission and helped strengthen outdoor recreation in our community, and we’re grateful for their partnership.

Putting on an event of this size takes an incredible team, and they are currently looking for a few last-minute volunteers to help make this year’s race a success. If you have a few hours to spare and want to support an event that gives so much back to our trails and outdoor community, please consider lending a hand.

Thank you, Bighorn Trail Run, for all you do. Let’s help them finish strong! ❤️

May 30th. Because in Wyoming, the calendar is merely a suggestion.

Fifteen years ago, winter came roaring back with a late-season dump that turned our trails white again. These photos of the trails and Curt Schwamb are proof that in the Bighorns, snow season sometimes writes its own rules.

Sunburn one day… powder day the next. ❄️☀️

Anybody else remember this storm?

Happy Monday from the off-season side of Nordic life ☀️🌲

No freshly groomed trails. No race results. No wax reports.
Just a friendly reminder that ski trails don’t magically appear every winter… they’re powered year-round by volunteers, planning, maintenance, fundraising, trail work, and a whole lot of people who love being outside.

So while the skis are stored away, we’re still dreaming about snowflakes ❄️

At the Sibley Lake and Cutler Hill Nordic Trails, we encourage trail use for classic skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. Sharing the trail and making sure the trails continue to be accessible for all these users takes cooperation and consideration.

First, no matter how you’re getting around on the trails, respect the tracks! The BMN grooming team works hard to prepare the base and carefully set tracks for classic skiing. Walking, snowshoeing, skate skiing, or biking over the tracks just isn’t cool. Don’t be that person!

Speaking of walking, while hiking on the groomed trails may not seem that much different than snowshoeing, snowshoes and skis spread out your weight and keep you from “post-holing” your way up the trails. Footprints, even a few inches deep, can be hard to remove with grooming equipment and can actually present a hazard to a skier coming downhill when hitting multiple divots. Please use snowshoes when hiking on the trails.

Keep single file on two-way trails
Downhill skiers have the right of way
Always ski in control
When approaching others from behind politely call “trail” or “on your left”
Yield to skiers who overtake you
If you fall, move off of the trail quickly and fill in your imprint
When stopped, step to the side, out of the tracks
Move off of the trail to allow grooming equipment to pass (and remember, groomers love cookies!)

Big things start with one. 🧡

This year, Black Mountain Nordic is proud to be part of WyoGives on July 15th, a powerful day of giving across Wyoming. The theme, “The Power of One,” reminds us that every single act of generosity matters. One donor. One trail. One moment outside that changes everything.

Your support helps us maintain trails, expand access, and create year-round opportunities for our community to get outside and connect.

We’re building momentum leading up to July 15th, and we’d love for you to be part of it. Stay tuned for ways to get involved, share our mission, and make your impact count.

Because it all starts with one. ✨

We are going to answer some of our most frequently asked questions in the next few posts. First 🆙
Are fat bikers allowed on the nordic trails? 🚴‍♂️❄️

Yes! Fat biking is welcome at Sibley Lake and Cutler Hill. Most riders prefer Cutler Hill, where the trails are a better fit for fat bikes.

To help protect trail conditions, we ask that fat biking be avoided at Centennial Park and South Park, where the snow is more fragile in the winter.

And a quick reminder for all riders: if the snow is soft and your tires are leaving deep ruts, it’s best to turn around. This helps keep the trails smooth and enjoyable for everyone.

Thanks for doing your part to care for the trails! 🙌 (Photos by BMN board member Kameron C.)

Off-season doesn’t mean slowing down over here, it just means the work looks a little different.

Up at Cutler and Sibley, our crew is deep in the in-between season grind: finishing trail projects, clearing logs and trees on Prune Creek and Blue Creek loops, and wrapping up dirt work on the Sageway loop.

We’re also working on trailhead signage, tackling machine, implement, and trailer maintenance, hauling trailers off the mountain, relocating the mobile warming hut, building out storage, waxing skis. And behind the scenes, writing grants and raising the funds that make all of this possible.

It’s not always glamorous, but it’s what keeps the trails ready for when the snow flies.

Thanks for being part of what makes it all worth it. ❄️🌲
